Show Rage Five FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 1976 THE SALT LAKE TIMES Doctors, Practices Linked Probate By IP Placement Program for further Notices Consult clerk of the District Court or the respective signers information. The tiny community of Choteau, Mont., needed a doctor. A Los Angeles family practitioner was tired of the big city and wanted to practice in a rural area. That city doctor is now practicing in the small Montana town, and the linkup was made possible by theUniversity of Utaih Physician Placement Program (PPP), and effort established in 1972 to improve the health of rural fntermountain area communities. With the help of a computer, Project Administrator Walter Bolic and Dr.richard Kirk of the department of family and community medicine have placed 43 physicians and 6 other health practitioners throughout the region in the past 3 V years. Basically, the computer linking system works this way: interested doctors fill out a questionnaire stating their medical and personal requirements. Community leaders who have solicited PPPs help fill out a similar form indicating their needs and their communitys opportunities. The forms are then entered into a computer that matches" doctors and towns. The computer, however, is only the first step in physician placement, Mr. Bolic said. "We found there are many factors the computer cant tell us, so were supplementing this service with more personal contact with physicians and community leaders." This personal contact involves determining the degree to which community residents acknowledge the need for medical services and whether the town's social aspects may conflict with those of the physicians and their families, Problems the computer doesn't tell us about are different for every community, and we have to be realistic when placing a doctor or he or she will not remain there," Mr. Bolic said. The nonprofit placement pro gram is consistently expanding its activities. Dr. Kirk said there are currently 110 communities on file as soliciting assistance, and physicians from as far away as West Germany have written expressing interest in the program. Plans are being made to assist University of Utah medical students and residents in selecting rural practice sites, Dr. Kirk added. Besides directly placing physicians and other health practitioners, the program helps certain towns gain classification as "critical Health Shortage areas. This designation enables those communities to have National Health Service Corps physicians assigned. Dr. Kirk pointed out that some of the physician shortage problems faced by small communities, principally in Utah and Wyoming, are caused by expanded energy development programs.
