HOW TO GUARD AGAINST BIRTH DEFECTS Every year, about 250,000 children are bom in the United States with birth one in every 10 American families are hit-y- et few people really know much about birth defects. .how they can be treated. . .and what can be done to avoid them. For a long time it was assumed that nothing could be done to prevent birth defects. But that idea has proved to be outdated. Safe and reliable vaccines and injections have recently been developed against two major causes of birth defects: rubella (German measles) and Rh blood disease. Use of these vaccines and injections is already saving thousands from being born malformed, severely crippled or dead. Rubella, also called German measles, is a relatively mild disease, normally lasting three days. It mainly affects young children. Rubella can have serious results if a child gets the disease and infects his mother when she's pregnant. If a mother gets rubella during the first three months of pregnancy, she may have a baby with severe birth defects. The only sure, safe way to help stamp out rubella is to vaccinate young children, both boys and girls. Children from age one to maturity should be vaccinated first. They are the ones most likely to catch it and spread it. .Rubella vaccine should not be given to pregnant women because, the virus in the vaccine might damage her unborn baby. Another major birth defect is Rh blood disease, a condition that can occur in a child whose father has a blood element called "Rh factor," when that element is not present in the mothers blood. Persons whose blood contains Rh factor are called . "Rh positive." Those whose blood doesn't contain it are called "Rh negative." How does Rh blood dis ease occur? An unborn child medical and health histories may have inherited Rh pos- of themselves and their famiitive blood from his father, lies. He may also examine and some of this blood may get into the bloodstream of its Rh negative mother during the birth process. Introduction of Rh positive blood into an Rh negative mothers bloodstream can cause the mother to manufacture antibodies which may attack the blood cells of her next Rh positive child. The damaging effect of Rh positive blood which an Rh negative woman might receive from an unborn Rh positive child may be neutralized by giving her a simple injection within 72 hours after each pregnancy birth, miscar- the riage or chance of her subsequent babies having a blood dis-- j ease is much less, even if I she and the father have different blood types! The Lederle Laboratories product that does this, is important because babies each year are 20,000 and 5000 a year 'affected, die. Now this tragedy is unnecessary. ..Genetic Counseling can also play a major role in preventing birth defects. Genetic Counseling is advice given by a doctor to prospective parents on matters pertaining to heredity. During the consultations, the doctor gets as much information as possible from both prospective parents about the abortion-an- d Rho-Immun- e, them medically for possible disease conditions they aren't aware of. The information thus gained helps him determine whether there is a danger of certain birth defects in an expected or possible future child. As another safeguard, parents should also seek prenatal care, which can contribute toward the birth of a healthy baby. Certain diseases of the pregnant women and her unborn baby can be avoided by following medical instructions regarding diet, exercise, immunizations and other factors. On the other hand, if the expectant mother neglects prenatal care, she increases the risk to herself and her .baby. Neglect can result in a diseased, malnourished or premature child. Any of these, conditions can cause stillbirth or. serious damage to the unborn baby. Pregnant women should avoid all drugs and medi-cinenot prescribed by a physician. Not a deeping pill bought over the drugstore counter. Not an aspirin. Not a laxative. Not a tranquilizer. Nor vitamin pill. No S' medicineunless your doctor has told you to take it. Some kinds of birth de- fects now can be prevented. By following these suggestions; you can increase your chance of having healthy, normal, happy children. . |
