Tax If you pay someone $50.00 or more for household services in any three month calendar quarter, you must .report these payments and pay social security taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. The report for the January, February and March calendar quarter is due April 30, 1973, Roland V. Wise, District Director of Internal Revenue for Utah said this week. Often when maids or other household employees apply for benefits, it comes to light that all social security taxes have not been paid, Mr. Wise said. The IRS then has to secure delinquent returns from the employer penalties and interest due. This may delay and decrease benefits for the household employees. The social security tax on the household wages is 5.85 percent for the employer and 5.85 per cent for the employee. When filing the quarterly report, the employer should include a check for 11.7 per cent of cash wages paid for the period. Employers must use Form 942 Employers Quarterly Tax Return for Household Employees to report the social security taxes due. After the first om is filed, a copy of Form 942 is mailed to every employer in time for the next quarterly report. However, if you do not receive a form, you may obtain one from your local IRS office. ally deer may find their way onto the highway. Video taped in U studios, the innovative curriculum consists of sixty 25 minute cassette lectures on the cultural and physical foundations of astronomy. A general education class (Physics 160) will be available beginning this month to persons working in Alta, a world famous ski resort town 30 miles southeast of the campus. The course is also scheduled this year at the Salt Lake City Library and the Utah State Prison. Physics Chairman Peter Gibbs is convinced this educational tool will lend itself to a wide variety of subjects as well as to the needs of specific audiences. The public school teachers, for example, could use the self administered cassettes during free time to keep their classroom material current. - Isolated groups such as Indians living on reservations may also be prime audiences for the cassette lectures. Such participants would enroll in courses dealing with topics of particular relevance to them and recorded in their own language. The U physicist thinks the new instructional model will prove valuable to all Americans. It is very clear that the future holds continuing education for both the high school and college graduates. Color playback equipment for television cassettes cost less than $1,000 and can be attached to any set. Although the cartridges will serve the public only on a r limited scale, U researchers predict this is the beginning of an educational revolution which is to increase demand for the widespread use of cable television. Dr. Gibbs stresses that the cassette curriculum is not aimed at full time students. Rather, the U course is designed primarily for the lay public. There are no prerequisites under the open admissions policy and participants register under the new credit no credit option. If they pass they receive four hours of college credit without a letter grade. Otherwise, no permanent record of enrollment is kept. The greatest advantage of cassettes is the flexibility they provide for the student. Participants may listen to several lectures each session or repeat one, according to individual needs. Recognizing personal contact to be a critical part of any educational program, the U Physics Department is providing a telephone hotline for individual or conference discussions with an instructor. Small group discussions and examinations will also be arranged for the experimental program. Dr. Gibbs notes that while the similar teaching models have long been used in industry, the approach is new to educational institutions. This is not the way to learn everything, but we intend to explore the place of television cassette in the educational scheme. Materials for the production and presentation of the course have been drawn from uinversity resources and the administrative personnel both on and off the campus volunteering their services for the project. He is a graduate of South High School and University of Utah. Ly Carol Hart Dealing With Drag Abuse A leading drug abuse expert recently stated that parental fear and frustration is a major barrier preventing more effective community action in response to the drug abuse problem. He went on to say that all parents can and should adopt a positive attitude toward drug abuse action, both within the family and together with others in the community. The Council on Family Health, a nonprofit organization sponsored by the manufacturers of medicines as a public service, suggests that the first step is to establish a healthy framework for the family at home. All parents should be sure they use legitimate medicines properly, for specific ailments or as recommended by their physician, and in the proper dosage. In addition to setting a good example, they should think of other ways to convey the importance of medicines in relation to good health to the younger members of the family. At the same time, the Council urges parents to examine the drug abuse problem facing the community. To find out what is really happening, parents can talk with school, police and hospi- tal officials, doctors, social work- ers and clergymen. In this manner, parents can gain insight into the types of drugs being abused, why they are being abused, their medical effects and the legal con- sequences of their abuse. You can then ask, What is my community doing? and deter- mine what prevention, treatment or rehabilitation programs al |
