Show I Wave .150 Feet High. j The waves that hurl themselves against J "Lot's Wife," one of the Mariana islands, i drench it to its topmost pinnacle, about B50 feet above sea level. A tremendous turf sometimes runs at Baker island, even without any strong wind, or perhaps the wind blowing from a contrary direction. An unbroken wall of water twenty-five feet high and one-quarter of a mile long rolls threatening to deluge the island, and affording one of the grandest sights i imaginable. 'These waves are said to be due to the southwest monsoon blowing strongly in the China seas, many miles awav. Chambers' Journal. |
