Show 8HEKIKF HURT. The Times stated yesterday that Sheriff Andrew J. Burt had been indicted in-dicted for paying out oounty money for election purposes iu the interests of the Peoples' party. This was a mistake as well as aa injustice to Mr. Burt. He was not indicted, but he was investigated, investi-gated, together with other People s party official by the grand jury. The grand jury made an extensive report, siiowing thnt several county olllcials had made use of the public money in a reckless, extravagant and unwarranted manner. In that report we find tho following: fol-lowing: An Illustration of the autocratic manner In which the county court dl8bursed public funds In found In the report of the sheriff, tiled with the court August 0, IS87. This report was duly approved by the court and contains the following follow-ing Items; On AiiKUHtS. IK87, A, M. Clayton, John Pickett Pick-ett and Hugh Watsoc, each gave a receipt to EHierlff Hurt for 110 "for services ut Ulnicham attending the election In the Interests of the People's party." in the name report A. 10. Hyde and J. M. Diirlow receipt to Sheriff Burt for (10 each "for sorvlciw at Bingham on election day." Anol her voucher In the same report Is us follows: "Kxpensea Incurred In sending live men to Bingham three days to attend election: Hoard and lodging 16.00 Railroad fare 11.10 Incidental expennes 15.75 O. K. John Piukrtt." Sheriff Hurt aJso puld t'AU attorney fees In May, 1885, In llipior caNes, although the county was paying Its own attorney &W0 per year. Tho grand Jury indicted several of tho county olllcials, but Sheriff Burt was not indicted. The affairs in his olllcu wore probably found In so much belter condition than iu any other oilice, that the grand jury concluded that he hardly deserved indictment. It is only fair to say that whatever Mr, Burt did he made it a matter of record, and it was his own records tiiat were brought up against him for the purpose, If possible, of finding find-ing enough evidence upon which to' base an indictment. Tun Times is glad to make this correcliou, as it does not desire to Intentionally misrepresent any ma'.i. |
