A new and useful employment has been developed for women which prom- ises rapid developmont. This is that of professional packer. The need of this kind of Bervice is apparont to those who witness movinps and transportation of household goods, now so much more fre-quent than formerly, or who see the in-terior of women's trunks or men's valise9. The cost of such holpers would be more than covered by the security and the ab-sence of loss, provided tho women were trained, competent and faithful. Mov-ing is now a terror from the quantitv of bric-a-br- accumulated, the pictures and books to be stored or transferred, the fine furniture to bo provided for, the cushions and draperies to be looked after. Quantities of valuables are sacri-ficed simply from want of care and the impossibility of securing efficient, prac-tical aid in such emergencies. Few peo-ple know how to pack, especially with a view to economy of space and the con-dition of the article when it is nnpacked. Housewife. 0EUGHT8 OF INTERVIEWING. n,DortorUl BWperieMe with Tonrlat. We cannot go so far back but the records to which we have access bear evidence of its previous existence. Bible lore is full of it. In ancient Egypt gems were engraved in the form of scarabsei, and have been, even quite re-cently, disinterred from the mummy pits. Hindoo mythology overflows with wonderfully vivid descriptions of pre-cious stones. The monarchs of the east, with their fondness for display and pomp, no doubt decorated their persons with gems long before they knew how to cut them, and they attributed, and they even now attribute, magic and properties to them. This belief is Bhared by almost every nation, and even the prosaic American has his pet superstition which he respects, while he may not openly acknowledge. ly Joy White in Ladies' Home Journal. During the Ninth century Gunnbjorn, a brave Bea rover from Iceland, discov-ered ""(JreehlaudT "icy mountains," and because of their glittering mantle of ice and snow he called the island Hvidsaerk or White Shirt. Some years later Eric the Bed came to the island to found colonies there, and changed the name to Greenland. Per-haps on a map White Shirt might not make so dignified an appearance as Greenland, but it would not be so strik-ingly inappropriate to the great "in-land ice," as the Danes call it a country of glaciers and enow fields that stretches away into the shadows of the unex-plored and unknown. Youth's Com-panion. Value of Oysters for Food. Speaking roughly a quart of oysters tontains on the average about the Bme quantity of active nutritive subs-tance as a quart of milk, or a pound of very lean beef, or a pound sod a half of fresh codfish, or two-thir-of a pound of bread. But Me the weight of actual nutriment in tlie different qualities of food named is wry nearly the same tha quality is wide-- 'j different. That of the very lean meat w codfish consists mostly of what are called in chemical language protein comp-ounds or "flesh formers" the sub-ran- ce which makes blood, muscle, tendon, bone, brain and other nitrog-enous tissues. That of the bread tontains but little of these, and con-N- s chiefly of starch, with a little fat and other compounds which serve the as fuel, and supply it with heat 'ad muscular power. The nutritive subs-tance of oysters contains considerable 'f both the flesh forming and the fcore especially heat and force giving Oysters corns nearer to milk ',Mn almost any other common food; 'Mr values for supplying the body with tutorial to build up its parts, repair Its stes and furnish it with heat and en-"?- y would be prett nearly the same. wntary Magazine. Street Sweeping Machine. A street sweeping machine has been patented by a Califomian. This ma-chine involves the novel principle of throwing the dirt upward and backward over the top of the brush into f-.- e base of the elevator, and thence carrying it directly back and discharging it into a delivery spout at the rear. The special advantage of this machine is that the elevator, being behind the brush, only one elevator is required. Side brushes and a gutter brush and power transmit-ting mechanisms to operate all the brushes at the proper speed are also pro-vided, together with several adjustments of the various parts.-N- ew York Com-mercial Advertiser.
