Moss said this week that President Fords veto of the electric car bill was a foolish act and a serious blow to this nations efforts at energy conservation. Moss, who was chief Senate sponsor of the bill, said he will work to override the residents veto in the Senate. HIt is regrettable that the President chose to veto this bill. Moss said, "The President talks energy conservation, but when he gets a chance to sign into law a bill that will actually help this country regain its energy independence, he rejects it. It seems to me the President is not really interested in conserving energy al all. The President said ERDA is already working on electric vehicles, but the fact is that ERDA is doing virtually nothing at all. The President also said that private industry can handle the development of this vehicle, when the fact is private industry has less than $7 million total Research money committed to this project, he. said. Tt is true, he said, that much research is needed in battery systems, but one of the major thrusts of the bill the President vtoed is to provide money specifically for research into advanced battery systems. There is nothing premature about the government providing research money now for the needed technological breakthroughs. The electric vehicle bill would $160 million .establish a five-yea- r, research, development and demonstration project within the Energy Research and Development Administration to promote the development of an electric vehicle that could function as a practical alternative to the gasoline-powere- A fine contribution comes from executives of the Chicago-base- d Maremont Corporation who are charged one dollar for each minute they are late to staff meetings and another dollar each for every minute the meetings last overtime.
