Ointment or Stanford whose team treated Mary Harvey. The improvements made during the past decade have prosurvival rates duced symptom-fre- e after five years, in Hodgkins disease patients of from 85 to 90 percent in the very early stages of the disease. The treatment includes clinical staging to determine the extent of the disease as well as diagnostic surgery in the study of the lymph area, and system. Treatment involves very refined high voltage radiation therapy and drug therapy. As yet, the cause of Hodgkin's Disease is unknown, but it usually attacks younger people, occurring more frequently at ages 20 through 29. The other malignant lymphoid diseases peak at ages 50 through 59. However, both may be seen at mid-bod- y X-ra- y in preboth ends of the age-spaschoolers and in those 75 and older. Its most common symptoms are painless enlargement of the lymph nodes, frequently in ones neck or mid-bod- y areas such as the spleen, the lungs or digestive tract. However, almost any organ can be involved. Sometimes patients will experience pain in the affected nodes upon drinking alcohol. General itching is a frequent complaint. The disease has three identifiable forms: 1) chronic, which is slow in developing; 2) the intermediate form which develops faster and usually in the abdominal area; and 3) an acute form characterized by n, weight loss, fever and night sweats. As in Miss Harvey's case, the key to successful treatment is the teamwork between the internist, the diagnostician, the therapist, radiologist, the surgeon and pathologist who must carefully assess the findings and jointly decide on treatment. The first step toward cure is of course detection. The earlier the better and as in Mary Harveys case, she is alive, well, and working again. One spin-of- f for Mary Harvey has been her frequent rap sessions with patients at Stanford, where her cheerful personality and proven wellbeing gives them encouragement and hope. There was a tremendous rash of and physicals," among chest her friends and associates, she says. Two of them had cervical problems which fortunately were cleared up. Now back to leading a normal life, which besides flying includes sewing, reading and cooking her special dish, drunk chicken which I make with Grand Marnier, vermouth, apricots and other things Miss Harvey had this to say: I want to impress upon people that with early detection you do have a chance with cancer." Witter, chairman of Dean Witter Organization Inc., told shareholders in the in- vestment firms just-release- d develop energy sources, fight pollution and produce the goods and services needed not only by our own people, but by people around the world. Risk capital has a direct relationship to employment, since American industry must invest more than $30,000 to produce a single new job. Commenting on the San Francisco-based firms record revenues and income in the fiscal year ended August 31, he cited several contributing factors. Among them were the abatement of inflation, generally lower interest rates and the absence of such traumas as the oil embargo and the presidential resignation." The firm earned $12,300,-00- 0 on total revenues of $180,000,-000- . annual report. Estimates place that need at about $4 trillion between now and 1985, the report said. Meeting this need requires the government to change existing tax laws, he said, especially the double taxation of dividends which encourages debt and discourages equity financing. To deal with the capital shortage presently facing the country, a tax program must be enacted which encourages the invest ment of risk capital by the individual investor. He pointed out that risk capital Shareholders were told that provides industry with the financial resources needed to explore new Dean Witter's branch network now technologies, increase productivity, totals 121 offices in the U.S. |
