Show THE SALT LAKE TIMEl . Ignorance and Neglect are Most Frustrating Causes of Blindness The most frustrating causes blindness are ignorance and of neglect. So stated Virginia L. Boyce at the annual meeting of the Utah Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Mrs. Boyce is the executive director of the National Society headquartered in New York City, now celebrating its 65th anniversary. Virginia S. .Boyce, executive director of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, has been one of the early pioneers in the sight conservation program. In her long service with the society she has led the battle against public apathy, worked to overcome public ignorance and through her leadership and guidance gained public acceptance and cooperation in efforts to eradicate some of the leading causes of blindness. She was influential in developing the first glaucoma screening programs in this country which today form an important part of any health examination. According to Mrs. Boyce, ap- - proximately 150 Utahns will become blinded during the next year and the tragedy is that half of this blindness is preventable. Cataracts and glaucoma still are the leading causes of blindness. Medical help is available for both but early detection is important. A. Orville Helgeson, the executive director of the Utah Society for the Prevention of Blindness announced the election of Dr. Gary B. Stanford, OPH, as the new director of the Society, along with Ralph Jones, director of Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training, as vice president, and Maurice Warshaw, well known philanthropist, as a director of the organization. He has been FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1973 Aspiring Journalists Ride Along With Local Station Young students will continue to wander around the KCPX news department until representatives from some 12 area high schools have had a first hand look at TV journalism. These ride alongs are interested students who spend a day with KCPX 4 reporters following news stories from preparation to broadcast. Upon arrival at the studio at 9 a.m. the participants are given a tour of the station and then assigned to members of the news staff for the day. High schools are currently scheduled for visits into the spring of 1974. According to News Director Art Kent this program is to expost students to the rapidly-growin- g TV field, thereby providing awareness before college study. Explaining the programs purpose he said, We feel that the more the prospective journalist can learn by participation and involvement, the better he will be for absorbing academic theory. Though KCPX and the other stations participate in University intern programs, most of the emphasis and exposure to high school students is in the field of print journalism. The program is considered a general success by the participants to date, some of whom had never seen the inside of a TV station. As one ride along put it, I cant believe now how much work it is.
