I The selection .committee for The Oil Shortage the scholarship included Sterling j Although the oil shortage this year is not expected to be really serious in most parts of the country, the situation could become extremely serious in a few years and the key to whether oil supplies in this counry are adequate then lies in the Middle East. Crosby Noyes, writing in the Washington Star, reports that whereas the nation until recently supplied all of its own energy needs, today we must import thirty per cent of its petroleum. By 1985, it is estimated, we will be importing over 50 per cent, regardless of what is done to increase U.S. production. Taking into consideratoin the precarious political position of the United States in the Middle Easrt, and recent blunt warnings from several Arab countries that unless we change our policies oil shipments will not be increased, one doesnt need to look further to appreciate the grim potential in the present situation. The dim, uncertain future facing the nation in this field is one of the major reasons why U.S. firms are being encouraged to conclude massive oil production arrangements with the Soviet Union. There may be other possibilities, perhaps from the vast reserves now being tapped under the North Sea, but it seems safe to say the United States, once in petroleum, is on the road to a far more vulnerable energy position in the years ahead, which may affect national economic and security planning. pro-Isra- el R. In some are as homes can not be sold because no one wants to move into a neighborhood with an airport problem. In a number, of foreign cities curfews have been invoked to permit residents to sleep. (Washington, D.C. is one of the few U.S. citeis with a curfew, for National Airport.) Some propose even larger jets to reduce the number of planes, others think airports must be located many miles from cities, etc. The new Dallas-F- t. Worth airport solves the problem with distance. The certain answer to the problem, however, is less noisy engines, and despite the protests of manufacturers and airlines, less noisy engines can somehow be built. Traditionally, in engine evolution, its claimed noise problems are insoluble. Time always proves theres a way. Such a way must be found to reduce jet noise in arid around the nations airports, which are likely to grow in number, as will the problem, unless engine noise is institutions. His foster parents, Dr. and Mrs. David W. Paul, in Weber County, say that young Watchman succeeds in any field he and his high school chooses, accomplishments indicate just that. He was a Sterling Scholar nominee, recipient of a W pin for academic excellence, listed Sobchak, University associate professor of English, and director of one of two film workshops scheduled this summer on campus. .Cinema is one way to form a greater bond between all human beings, because it is the most immediate and pervasive 20th century art form. Good film should engage the mind, and ask the viewer to participate actively in some process, either intellectual or aesthetic. But that kind of film viewing is not comfortaple, since it requires a certain amount of preparation to get the maximum input from the human condition it presents. Dr. Sobchack will examine the relationship between literature and film during the 6th annual Cinema Workshop on Literature 2 and Film scheduled June on the Utah campus. Literature can present internal elements of the thinking and feeling process while film is restricted to external manifestations. When a novel that deals with internals is transformed into a screenplay it must convey its message by the subtleties of camera movement and lighting, he notes. The U associate professor, who directs the Universitys film studies programs, has published articles on film and is currently editor of the film section of the Western Humanities Review. He believes cinema broadens understanding and helps individuals discriminate between valid and invalid interpretations of reality. dial reduced. 0O0 New Series E Savings Bonds pay a bonus if held to maturity of five years, ten months. In a report to the Governor the Division of Water Resources said that the Great Salt Lake has valuable mineral, tourist and recreation potential, but that at present there is no single state agency to plan for the lakes future. The report also said that the Great Salt Lake is controlled by scores of state agencies and federal agencies along with private organizations and each is trying to pursue its own interests. Salt Lake City police will be on the alert for the formation of a new safety program for the reduction of fatal accidents at certain high traffic accident areas. The Fatal Accident Reduction Enforcement Program, which is funded for the six month period with a $65,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, has placed two squads of six men on patrol or the likely accident areas. .
