At about' that' time some astrologers from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, Where is the newborn King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in far-o- ff eastern lands, and we have come to worship him. King Herod was deeply disturbed by their question, and all Jerusalem was filled with rumors. He called a meeting of the Jewish religious leaders. Did the prophets tell us where the Messiah would be bom? he asked. Yes, in Bethlehem, they said, for this is what the prophet Micah wrote: - 'O little town of Bethlehem, you are not just an unimportant Judean village, for a Gover-nor shall rise from you to rule my people , Israel Then Herod sent a private message to the astrologers, asking them to come to see him; at this meeting he found out from them the exact time when they first saw the star. Then he told them, Go to Bethlehem and search for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him tool After this interview the astrologers started out again. And look! The star appeared to them again, standing over Bethlehem. Their joy knew no bounds! Entering the house where the baby and Mary his mother were, they threw themselves down before him, worshipping. Then' they opened their presents and gave him gold, frankincense and myrrh. But when they returned to their own land, they didnt go through Jerusalem to report to Herod, for God had warned them in a dream to go home another way. The states playwrights in cooperation with the Institute Theatre Arts Committee recommended that the competition be modified so that more productions of new plays will result rather than concentrating on picking a winner. Directors of the state theatres will be invited to the reader's theatre presentations and may choose a play to produce in their theatres. The theatres will be given a production stipend for sccenery, costumes, etc., and the playright will be given a royalty award by the Institute. It is estimated that present budget limitations will permit four major productions to be generated in 1973 through this format. Unlike previous competitions, there will be no limitations on the kind of plays. Musicals, comedy, tragedy, poetic drama and any other genre will be eligible for submission. Rules and procedure are available from the Division of Fine Arts, 609 East S. Temple. Judges will select three plays from each of the deadlines submissions for the readers theatre presentations. Each of the readers theatre playwrights will receive $75 to assist with copying of manuscripts and transportation. For the playwrights whose plays were selected for production by Utah theatres, a royalty award of $500 will be given. The producing theatre will receive $600 to assist in scenery, costumes and other production costs.
