The I.I.I. suggests the following: Arrange for a responsible adult or teenager to stay with the children when they go out. Educate your children in the proper thinking and behavior toward fire. Seek out those lines of sleepwear that meet the new flame resistance requirements. Energy Based Life Style Tlireee day workweeks, six month vacations and a leisure culture that would have been incomprehensible a few years ago are viewed by many as inevitable developments of the future. Yet, the only way in which these dreams of paradise on earth can ever be fulfilled is by application of energy. Standards of living have risen in direct proportion to rising energy consumption. A public affairs statement of Texaco Oil Co. says that, More than any other nation or civilization, we in America have shifted the burdens of hard physical work to mechanizel energy. Mechanical energy has freed our human energies and resources to build a modern, prospering society where work has dignity and the rewards of work are many. Mechanical energy also has given us time free time, by far the most precious of the energy industry. Commenting on zero growth proposals, the oil company's statement asks, What would this mean to millions of Americans whose very real material needs have not yet been adequately met? How would we explain to the Americans a decision to call a halt on further economic growth and opportunity? It is doubtful that a mayor of any major city, whose one most persistent frustration is money a lack of funds to rebuild, to renovate, to repair the decay of decades would take kindly to the idea that the job of America is completed. This is not all. Are the millions of people who have grown used to the idea that they do not have to work as hard as their forefathers did prepared to step back from their new life style? The answer to these question is locked deep in the earth of Alaskas North Slope, far beneath tlie seas off Americas coasts and everywhere else that reserves of petroleum and was wait silently for the U.S. public and its lawmakers to establish their priorities. by-produ- ct The young child with a hidden vision problem is in trouble. He cannot know he is not seeing, as he should, since he has no basis for comparison, as far as he is concerned, everyone sees things as he does. The inability to see properly can affect every aspect of his life, future as well as the present. Parents, says the Utah Society for the Prevention of Blindness, have to be aware of the possibility that a child could have a slight defect even when no readily discernible symptoms exist and his eyes appear normal and healthy. A complete professional eye examination to detect any possible visual impairment, preferably by the time a child is four and certainly by the age of six, is important, as the years are the time when treatment for many problems is most successful. Amblyopia, for example, is a common eye condition among young children which for most successful correction should be discovered before the sixth year. Sometimes called lazy eye, amblyopia develops early as the child is learning to see, when an eye muscle imbalance or other defect causes the perception oi a blurred or distorted image. To avoid the distortion, the child concentrates on seeing with one eye only. The other eye, the amblyopic one, gradually weakens from lack of use. Treatment for amblyopia involves correcting the initial condition, the muscle imbalance or other problem, and patching the good eye. This forces the child to use his amblyopic eye thereby building strength and restoring visual acuity. One in every 20 children in the U.S. is estimated to have some form of sight impairment. The Society sponsors periodic preschool vision screenings in various locations, conducted by specially trained volunteers, to help identify children with amblyopia and other vision problems. The screening process is not an examination or a professional test, but serves to determine the possible need for professional attention. Any child who as a result of the screening is suspected of having any form of vision defect is referred to an eye specialist. The Society also widely distributes educational materials on childrens vision problems, urging all parents ex-to have their childrens eyes amined in the preschool and the school years, to assure correction of any sight problem as early as the HA SSD GRRPIVIWE possible. According to a late count released by the U.S. Census Ihircau. four of every five households own cars and .'JO percent own two or more. Nearly two in every three households own the homes they live in and a growing number have second homes in the country. Ninety five percent of the U.S. families own at least one TV set. In view of this striking evidence that nearly everyone in the country, measured by ownership of homes and other property, is most emphatically a capitalist and an integral part of an affluent establishment, it becomes somewhat difficult to explain the existence of so many dial 860 Where thousands of listeners enjoy concert music and news every dayi In a recent canvass of some 5,000 Salt Lake County voters in swing and Republican areas show that Senator George McGovern is leading President Nixon 34 to 32 percent with 34 per cent still undecided. Dr. Charles Nabors said although the figures conflict sharply with other polls we believe the count is more accurate because it is more current. i I I |
