Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1972 Vision Can Often Be Restored For Persons With Cataracts Cataract is the chief cause of blindness in the nation today, most commonly occurring as senile cataract. A contributing factor to its retaining such a high place on the list of blindness causes is the fallacy that loss of sight is an inevitable consequence of the aging process and nothing can be done. No so, says the Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Surgery, the only known treatment for cataract, is successful in 95 cases out of 100. What is more, the surgical procedure is safe, and is becoming safer and more effective with each passing day. Cataract is not a film on the surface of the eye. It is a condition in which the actual lens of the eye becomes clouded the reason is not known. This clouding prevents the light rays which are essential to sight from entering the eye, with the result that the individual with mature cataract can determine only the shades of light and dark and cannot perceive distinct images. Cataract first appears as a small opaque spot in the pupil and may develop until the entire lens of the eye is affected. The eye then appears grey and white in color. Initially, in addition to the visible physical change, the cataract sufferer experiences blurred vision. As the condition progresses it is apparent in double vision and PXA se One of fho most significant anniversaries in the history of volunteerism occurs in 1972 the PTA celebrates its 75th of 'working totally in the Jrear of children and youth.
