Ever .inco The Timi:s aunounced Jay Gould and party would visit Salt Lake City a wonun clad in black has' mads trips to the Union Faciffi; depot to sue the man of millions. She rides in a strcot car to ths depot about mid-day and diligently scans thu cars on the side track in hopes of discovering the special which conveys Mr. Gould aod party from puint to point. Yesterday the woman gave up her search between 3 and 4 o'clock in the afternoon. She entered a car to re-turn to Main street and after a short silence said to tba auburn haired con-ductor: "Jay Gould is expected in the city almost any day." The conductor looked at the woman and said "Whos's he?" "Why, don't you know," srid the woman", "Mr. Gould is prasideut of that railroad out there," pointing to the Union Pacific network of tracks. The conductor straightened himself up and thought. He thought liard hut could not convince himself that Mr. Gould was on his list of acquaintances. The woman in black was iir.;r'ssl at his iack of knowle !, ot r 1 Mien lint she said nothing. A e.v e',m up the track she win ; in i tion. As the paper has an exceedingly targe it is ono of the best short writo ups this city has ever obtained: From Denver, Colorado, on the east-r- n side of the Rockjr Mountains, to Kan Francisco, is a thousand niile, From Helena, Montaua, south to Pres-cott- , Arizona, is another thousand miles. These two linen will cross, roughly speaking, at right ang's. Where they meet in Salt Lake City. And in all that vast mountain region embraciug Utah iUulf, and, in part, Colorado, California, Arizona, Mon-tana, Oregon, and uearly all of Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming, there i no other town to rival this city in imuort- - nee, siye or position. Coal is mined 011 both parts of the Wasatch Mountain, end on the IIirh Plateaus imm the Uintahs to the Colorado River. A-lthough the output ol coal is at present only a quarter of a million tons, it might be ten tiines that amount, and ths supply is ample for the demand of the whole region west to the Pa-cific. A vcrv pure antimony is obtained at Antimony, on the upper Sevier; quick-silver has also been found in one or two .places; and lodges of rock salt have been uncovered at various points vi the south, and in the Green river valley there are sure indications of oil ami eas. But one of the most important factors in developing the country and in-creasing the prosperity of Salt Lake City itself is the construction of a rail-way to Deep Crook, one of the richest mining districts in the world. This railway, as far as can be calculated at present, will offer facilities of transport to some twenty-liv- e mining districts, ranging in distance from thirty live to two hundred miles from Salt Lake. !None of iheso districts will itsulf be more than forty miles from the line of railroad. This gives a fair idea of tho importance of the enterprise, and is in itself sutlicient justification of the en-thusiasm of those iuterested ia Salt Lake. Faaoh anil l't.r Tr..i T.irten nd the Air MVIItilT With KlplliiK Fruit. A ride on the pea branch of the Kapid Transit enables observers to wit-ness the fruitful condition of the East bench. The pear, peach' apple and other trees which adoru the pretty homes on that side of the city, are breaking down beneath the weight of ripening fruit. In fact all kinds of fruits seem to thrive eMceptioaally well in that section, the crop of strawberries being very prolific. Then too the veg-etables are in a tine, healthy condition, corn iu tassel as high as onVs head. This condition of vegetation is but ono small spot in the vast valley and throughout Utah, the soil and climate of which is well adapted to the produc-tion of frnils and vegetables. From now on until fall the harvest of fruit will continue. Should anybody enter-tain doubts about the croii Intlhem ride through the country and notice the abundance on all . . . - "B;C rcJM'JERS."
