It wis in the old days, when traveling by ntngo conch was more comimiii tUiiu it is ut present, tlmt the then iirehliishnp of Turin, Monseiiietir A tiro, voyaging to a nearby purish, took phu e in it e with it miml.- - r of (jentleiiien of differriit soci;il stations. Ainungatho Ri'ijup was u yotitiK drummer for a busi-ness house who, lil;o his success! it's of a later era, wan ever on tho lookout for n good story in his own mind mid practi-cal joke. The clerilflji standing of tha nnhbinhop did not rttempt him even from attempts ut banter or witticism, but with tho consideration lie thought due to the company present he passed the youngster's efforts over vilh merely an indulgent smile. W'axiug bolder by this apparent immunity, tho young trav-eler ut last went beyond all bounds of proper respect. "Can you tell me, yntir grace," lie asked spiritedly, "the difference between the archbishop and an nss'.'" The reverend Keiitlemnn, with bis cus-tomary courtly iiutnticr and without tho least Appearance of offense or resent-ment, replied that ho could not. "liecause," replied this clown in his own littlo circus, "the one bears n cross ou his breast and tho other on his back." Tho sally, such as it was, was met by the most frigid silence by all tho pas-sengers save the archbishop, who smil-ingly inquired: "Now, in my turn, I'd like you to tell us tho difference iietweeu a commercial traveler and an ass?" As though it were a mystery aa deep as the .Sphinx the young wit pondered for some time and then gave it up. "I don't see it ." lie confessed. "Neither do I," replied the archbishop; "there isn't any." The smal t drummer got oft at tho next changing of horses. Washington Star. NEVADA NOTES. Near Tieowawa aro geysers that nt intervals, when ejecting boiling water, ran he seen from the windows of rail-road cars, six miles distant. A band of horses, numbering 27.1 head, passed north of town last even-ing. They had been purchased by a mail named King, of Texas, in Paradise valley at an average price of a head and were being driven by six horsemen to Kansas Citv. Silver State. S. J. Anderson has discovered a mru'bie mine in the hills west of Winne-mtice- a Mountain, and says he will soon be prepared to furnish lirst class tomb-stones nt reasonable ratet. A good qnaliiy of snap was also found near by, but he says ho hits no uso for it. A dispatch from lie no announces the l.llling of (Mmiies Davis by Hugh Miller at Long valley. 17 miles north of Keno. It appear! that Miller made improper overtures to I he wife of Davis, who informed her husband. A quarrel between the two men ensued, resulting in the killing of Mr. Davis by shooting. Mill Citv, on the Central l'aeilie, 88 miles wesi of lialtle Mountain, is the center of an activity that may bring great returns', reier ivoon-oia- , the Mill City hotel, has a small mill near the railroad, where he is about to reduce 4(11) tons of orq from tho Humboldt (ueeu. tive miles out of Oreana. The rock has to be hauled by team and shipped III) miles by rail. The CoiivcrMiltioiiHl Circle. Tho circle must not be too large. 1 say nothing of public banquets of strung-el's- . They are a contradiction in terms. Dig dinner parties of ill assorted guests also are failures from a conversationist point of view. A fireside, or a table, round if possible, and. say, four or half a dozen guests, are sufficient. More will break tip into separate knots, and fewer mean a tete-a-tet- "I bad," says Tho-rea- "at Walden three chairs in my bouse, ono for solitude, two for friend-ship, three for society." The hermit Thoreau in bis but at Walden was wiser than tho man who looks for society in a crush. An unhappy husband, living in Port-land place, whoso wifo inflicted huge parties upon him, was standing in a very forlorn condition leaning against the chimney piece. A gentleman came up to him and said: "Sir, as neither of us is acquainted with any of the people here, I think wo bad best go bom:'."' Social crowds must not expect tho great men amongst them to talk well. She must bavo been a most unreasonable person who was disappointed with Na-poleon because, when a lot of ladies were presented to him, be only remarked to each of them bow hot it was. 's Magazine. COLORADO NOTES. The brewers strike nt boulder is still unsettled. Villa Grove expects to secure a big coke plant. JohnJ Burns, a Leadville saloon-keepor- , was shot and instantly killed by James Kagland on Mouday. A reward of 1000 ha been offered for tho arrest of the villain who at-tempted to blow up tho dauce house at Kico. J. M. Yaldez has been appointed postmaster at Cucharas, lluerrano county, vice It. Ames, resigned; J. llen-kaufe- r at Tine Wood, Larimer county, vice Thomas Hair, resigned. A Mrs. Thomas of Central City has applied to the supreme court of Colo-rado for permission to practice law in the state. Grave doubts aro expressed as to whether or not she can be admit-le-to tho bar on account of constitu-tional provisions. If a woman who is iiiaiilied to practice law and has passed the required examination successfully cannot do so it is timo tbo constitution was changed. WYOMING NOTES. J. A. Harris was on Monday shot and instantly killed at liull'alo. General Miseuer, thu commander at Fort Hussell, has been ordered on his own application to proceed to his homo at Detroit. Mich., to await his retire-ment from active service, to take place ou August 1st next. The stamp mill from Cummins City, loaded on board the cars at Soda Lakes a few days ago, will be started for Gold Hill via Carbon in a day or two, as noon as the load cau be completed. It will be the first mill in the new camp, and will run ten stamps at the start and ten more as soon as they can be put iu shape. Poison by AbMorption. The slow absorption of many poisons changes in some more or less modified form tho cjomplexion, but arsenicanj am-monia show their effect about oh quickly as any. Tho popular belief that arsenic clears the complexion has led many billy women to kill themselves with it in small, continued doses. It produces a waxy, ivorylike appear-ance of the skin during a certain ta";e of the poisoning, but its terrible alter effects have become too well known to make it of common use as a cosmetic. The effects of ammonia upon the com-plexion are directly opposite from that of arsenic. The first symptoms of am-monia poisoning which appeal's among those who work iu ammonia factories is a discoloration of the skin of the nose and forehead. This gradually extends over the face, until tho complexion has a stained, blotched aud unsightly appear-ance. With people who take ammonia into their systems in smaller doses, a.s with their water and food, these strik-ing symptoms do not appear so soon.
