Show , , TH. SALT LAKE TIMES. SATUKDAY "jfOVEMBEK 15, 1890 7 A FAMOUS WHEELMAN. B. C Anthony, Who Lowered Rowes Great Quarter Mil Record. The present season has been a great one for record smashing in every branch ol sport, and the knights of the "silent steed" have kept up with the procession of smashers. E. C. Anthony, the hardy bi-cyclist who stands ready to mount and fly away in tie accompanying picture, has rUs-- - E.'C. ASTHOST. tinguished himself in many contests, but his most notable feat was lowering by 3 5 seconds the quarter mile record of 83 5 seconds, made by tho famous wheelman, " W. A. Iiowe, of Springfield, in USS5. An-thony is 26 years of age, and a Tesident of Taunton, Mass. Despite this fact he al-ways rides under the cherry diamond of the Manhattan Athlet ic club, of New York. During his racing career Anthony hits placed to his credit twenty-fiv- e first prizes, and in numerous other contests he has been well up nraong the winners. In ISiff ho won the five mile championship of Boston.' In 1389 he was captain of the Taunton Cycling cluh, which defeated the New Bedford team Ui a great twenty-fiv- e mile race. ,In May, 1600, he was one ot the three men who succeeded in lowering tho Irvington-Milbur- twenty-fiv- e mile road record, and at Ntw Haven In June of the present year Anthony proved himself a worthy opponent for .Willio .Windle. , The French Tragedienne of the Epoch. All Paris is talking about a new idol. She is Mme. Rote Caron, who is taking the part of Brunehild in the opera of "Sigurd" at the Grand Opera. The en-thusiasm with which she is regarded is abown by a remark in Le Monde Illustre, which says, "Mme Caron- - has with resgon lvwn ylvfln tho t.iflo nf t.ho lvrifl MME. K08H CARON, tragedienne of cur epoch." Mme. Caron made her debut In Brussels in September, 1883, in "Robert," taking in that city with great success afterward difficult parts in "Da Juivc," "Les Huguenots," "Faust," etc, In 1885 she was flrstaeen at the Grand Opera in Paris, where she was given instant recognition. She afterward left Paris for a time, and has this season returned to find the admiration of the past turned into the worship which only Paris can give to a popular favorite. ! ' WALKEKV. A f'Sojer Bye" 'Bait Player- -A Wonderful " Woman Philadelphia's Plucky Swimmer. ToS promises to be a season of curious things among the theatres of America. The apparent reason is that the unique stage attractions of Europe have just found that an occasional tour in America is likely to be very profitable. And when Europe's ' queer things are added to the ones which America already has the sum total is startling. Of course all the new things from the other side of the water take a taste of New York before they bite at the interior of the ' country. The newest thing in New York (theatrically speaking) is the troupe of German midgets. It comprises ten adults, the tallest of whom measures only forty-fiv- e inches from toe to crown. Bat al-though Dame Nature loft off a good.many inches when she made these little people ahe did not omit the brains. Every mem-ber of the troupe is of more than, average intelligence, and every member is worthy of a place among the really good actors and actresses of the time. . MissSelma Goerneris 18 years old and is forty inches tali Perhaps it would be better to say that she is forty inches short, instead. She wag anartistio embroiderer before she went on the stage. She plays male roles almost entirely and wears male attire with perfect ease and grace. Her Fnutt Ebert is a trifle more than thirty-fiv-e inches tall and is 23 years old. Once, while the troupe were at St. Petersburg, where the Lilliputians were entertained at the house of a prince, an officer of high rank lifted Miss Goer'ner to his lap despite her protestations, and began to pet her as it ahe were a child. Ebert, maddened by W0 OF THU MTDGETS AND AN OBDINABT - SIZED MAN. '' the insult to the young lady, jumped into a chair and fiercely.' slapped the .officer's face, crying: '"There;- take that! How dare you be so impudent?" Notwithstand-- . ing Ebert's size it was really a serious mat-ter for the officer. Had the blow been de-livered by a full sized man it must have resulted in a duel. As it was, the officer left St. Petersburg that night. Johannes Wolf, another member of the company, is f43 years old and a little more than that inaTrjMnehes taHf-Hi- - ef eomediaa-.'- rare ability. Ida Mahr, about thirty-seve- n ..inches tall, is an emotional actress. She is 23 years old, and her gestures and elocution. ' are perfect. Adolf Zlnk is just three feet talL He plays small parts. Mina Becker has a perfect form and an indescribably aweet little voice. She is just forty-flv- a inches tall. She plays emotional roles. Hon-na- n Ring, 24 years old, is less than forty-tw- o inches tall. Max Walter, a very clevef comedian, is less than forty-fiv- e inches tall. Miss Tony Meister is forty-ou- e inches tall and does well on the stage. She is very particular about her dresses. Taken all in all, the company gives one of the queerest performances New York ever saw, and not the least queer part of it is that the performance is really good from an artistic standpoint. A "Soger Boy" BaU Player. George P. White, whose picture appears herewith, is a member of the first class United States corps of cadets at West Point, and president of the great military school's representative nine. Mr. White is a crack player, handles his team with excellent judgment, and leads them GEORGE P. WHITB. to victory in many a hard fought game. He is a good all round man and does a great deal of head work during a game. His team recently defeated the Sylvans, of ' New York. Mr. White expects to be gradu-ated from West Point in June, 1891. A Wondorful Woman. Mis. E. E. Buermeyer, president of the ladies' branch of the Fresh Air club at BcD.sonhurst.Long Island, and wife of Buer-meyer, ex champion heavy-weig- boxer, is niA 4Vn Via gina fit BlilU UO the best, if not the very best.a'.l round athletes among the fair sex in Am-erica. She is 5 feet in height, weighs 133 pounds, and is a model of healt hy, robust womanh-ood. She can walk thirty miles 1. MRS. H. E. BDEKMEYEB. over a runs" with ease at a gait, climb mountains like a chamois, and ride all day cu hor safety bicycle. She has few equals as a long distance skater, handles a pair of sculls with rare skill and speed, paddles a canoe like an In-dian maiden, and can give points to her muscular husband on long distance swim-ming. In addition to all these accomplish-ments Mrs.' Buermeyer has the record of saving lifted 623 pounds with comparative ease. Philadelphia has a plucky swimmer in the person of I). M. Bnrriuger, a young "society man," who is credited with hav-iit- ti recently breasted the waves of the Delaware river for nine hours and fifteen minutes without rest. He swam twenty miles, and was still so fresh that his frienila were obliged to insist upon bis leaving the Water. Borringer is 30 years of age. MARSHAL'S SALE.
