Show Tm: decision of the present congress in the contested scat cases from the Twenty-eighth district of New York and the Seventh district of South Carolina Caro-lina will be watched with interest. The republican claim in each of these eases is very plain, but democrats hold the ciTtilicates and are aiding in making mak-ing laws for the nation. Jn the New York case the highest court in the state has decided that the republican candidate was elected. In the South Carolina case there is no dispute that the majority of the votes were republican, republi-can, but on the, technical ground that the ballots were a sixteenth of nn inch shorter than the law required they were all rejected and the democrat given the cci tilicale. |
