The four are associated in many enterprises aside from those mentioned and are considered as being among the busishrewdest and most ness men of the State. Simon Bamberger was a State Senator from Salt Lake county in the last Legislative session. John J. Jtaas, secretary of the La Mar Gobi Mines company, is a former Cincinnati man. He has been here one year and is the father of Mrs. Simon Bamberger. Dr. Thorne Headed the Society. Dr. E. I. Thorn, dentist, at one time president of the Ohio society, has been a resident of Zion for twelve years. Dr. Thorn was born and raised at Yellow springs, about fifty miles from Cincinnati, and was educated in Ohio. He came to Salt Lake during the boom days and has been pleased to remain in the City of the Saints. Giesy Family Is Prominent. Prominent among the "Buckeyes" is W. S. Giesy, who is an insurance and fraternal order man with a large circle of business and personal acquaintances. Mr. Giesy, father of Dr. J. I J. Giesy, came here on the crest of the boom of 1890 from Lancaster, O., as assistant deputy warden of the then United States penitentiary. He remained in th( employ of the Government until 193, when he took the position of overseer for a number of large ranchers in White Riverin valley, Nevada. His farm training Ohio, which covered a term of a number of years, was there turned to good advantage- and he made a success of th enterprise. In P'.ii he left th ranching business and entered the insurance business, with which he has remained. Mr. Giesy is a prominent politician of the Lincoln persuasion, but has never held public office in Utah. He was for a number of years chairman of the Republican committee in the First precinct. Mrs. W. S. Giesy is also a native of Ohio, born and reared near Ti.'tin. Another of the medical mrn ,originalwho ly from Ohio is Dr. J. U. was born at Chillicothe .and came to Salt Lake with his parents in Dr. Giesy completed the course of in- struction in th1 Salt Lake high school, graciuating with honors. Great excitement was created in Placerville PLACERVILLE, Cal., Aug. shortly before midnight by the sounds of shooting on a hill Just west of town. John Wittmer and Sam Martin, who had been watching the ridgf all evening, saw two men break from the brush and run through an orchard. The men fired at the fleeing figures, but did not bring them down. Several more f.ota were fired into the brush in which the fleeing men took refuge,' but without result. A score of citizens from town gathered on the hill and again the fugitives were seen breaking through the brush at the lower end of the orchard.
