Bryan (not the distinguished Nebraskan, but his Utah namesake.) was bound over to the District court yesterday afternoon in the sum of $2'0 to answer to a charge of committing an assault with a deaclv weapon on James McDonald. Bryan requested .that the bail be fixed at less than $200. rrosteutor Smith told Bryan that the jail was the bust place for him, as he medid rest and treatment. Complying with the State's request, Bryan's bond was set at l0o. As he was leaving th" courtroom he saw a friend and said: "If I get out on bond the first thing I will do will b to kill that son of galoot." referring to McDonald, the complainant. The remark was reported to Justice Clark, who confirmed it at once. It is not likely that Bryan will secure bonds. THE POLLTAX LAW First Case Where Payment Is sisted Is Now on Trial in the Re- City Court. In the civil division of the City court a case is on trial which is to test the validity of the right of the city to collect politax. The suit was brought by Salt Bake City and Peter 3. Condie. as Street Supervisor, against M, M. Johnson. The compl.iir.t recites that on April 11. a notice of politax was served on the defendant and h refused to appear at the time and place mentioned In the notice, or to pay the politax at all. Judgment in the sum of $3 and costs of the suit are asked for. Though many cases .milar to this one have been tried in the last, no defendant in any other case has ever questioned the right of the city to collect this tax. Judgments in these cases have been Invariably given in the city's favor. fni:N.'vc. Two New Trusts. Trenton, N. J., July 10. I had lived and worked in the East all my life, so, as might be expected, formed the impression that this was the 'rawest proposition I had ever seen. I was not long in discovering my mistake, let me assure you. Before I had got straightened out at my office in Kansas City on my. return, the business commenced piling up on me and demanding my time and attention.
