Rcripps, newspaper publisher, died at ; his home at Mlramlr near here at 1:14 this morning after an Illness of several sev-eral weeks. Hcrlpps was years of age. Hla death resulted from complications which followed an attack of Influenaa abnut a month airo. For twelve years he had been tha 'managing; director of the Hcrlpps News i the Newspaper Enterprise association .and allied news organisations, being one of the youngest newspaper publishers pub-lishers In the I'nited Htates. Hcrlppe was born in West Chester, la suburb of Cincinnati, O. He came to Han Diego witn nis parents wnen s years of age and had resided here since that time. Hurvlvlng are hla parents, Mr. and Mrs. K. W. Hcrlpps, and his brother, Robert P. Hcrlppa. Another brother, John I'. Hcrlpps. died here several years ago. A widow, Josephine Bed-ham Bed-ham Hcrlpps, and four children, - Kd-) Kd-) ward. James Jr.. Josephine and Ellen and Browning PH'Tlpps also sui 1 1 e. Scrlpps, said here today: "In the history of American newspapers, news-papers, no young man of James O. Hcrlpps' age ever held the managerial responsibility and authority that he held for a period of years. At one time he directed mora dally newspapers published In cities of tha United States than any other man In America. Ha Inherited from his father a genius that few men possess. "He cared little for worldly praise or attention. Hla modesty and retiring manner were a marked characteristic. "The death of James G. Hcrlpps at such an early age la a great loss to this country." |
