Show IT Yea I lava a Rcccrd, Vttch QzU ' A new. organization, the avowed purpose of which is to secure the election of members Of Congress Con-gress friendly to the cause of organized labor, has sprung up in Washington. It is called' the Labor Lyceum Bureau of Information, and the claim is made that Samuel Gompers,'the head of the American Amer-ican Federation of Labor, has approved of its plan of operations. ' , It took about, three months of correspondence to hatch out this new political bureau. The first move to organize it was made before Congress adjourned. The lyceum has sent out a circular, in which is stated its :aim, as follows: "The objects of this bureau shall be: The discussion of economic questions, ques-tions, as they relate to the educational, social and "industrial conditions of the wage-workers of the United States; to collect and disseminate legislative data relative to labor measures submitted to the Congress of the United States; to ascertain, so far . as possible, the attitude of Senators and Representatives Represen-tatives toward such measures and forward such in- formation to their respective constituencies and advise ad-vise the use of the initiative and referendum in the .election of Federal and State legislators." There will be a great peering into records of Senators Sen-ators and Representatives on the part of agents of the lyceum. - It is expected that the new organization organiza-tion will go after the scalps of a couple dozen men who have not been particularly friendly to the pet legislative measures of labor. A list of these men will be made up and sent out to the different labor unions in all parts of the country, with orders to bring about their defeat if possible. Literature prepared pre-pared by the lyceum will be sent into the districts where persons obnoxious to labor are running for office. In a certain few districts speakers will be provided to agitate the labor questions and to rally the workingmen against candidates who are marked for defeat. ,.i it Is claimed by those who are responsible for this organization that it is to be a permanent affair. . Branch bodies will be established in all the large cities, and ixC as many of tho smaller towns as prac ticable- The idea is to use it as a means of swing-iBg swing-iBg the labor vote for one party or the other, as the interests of labor dictate. . |
