The meeting; of the Salt Lake City - Public School Teachers association, which was held-at the west side high school yesterday afternoon, was' one of grreat Importance aside from the election elec-tion of officers of the association. The members of the association discussed dis-cussed at length the proposed tuition plan of' keeping the schools open the full term,, and stamped the proposition with? their disapproval. They favored. Instead, the plan of raising the funds by popular subscription, and as an . earnest of their sentiments, each teach er pledged one day's salary toward the fund. Unbridled Their Tongues. - The meeting was one of great Interest Inter-est As' there were no supervisors or principals present, the teachers unbridled un-bridled their " tongues and unburdened their hearts without restraint. Besides the remarks In the meeting, many gave private expression of their sentiment. During the-discussion of the tuition plan,- Miss Ethel M. Lane of the Ham-. Ham-. llton school said: "I am in favor of not teaching unless the full' salary 1 guaranteed. It has been said that if the doors of the schools are open we can't turn any children chil-dren away. Well, we won't turn them away, but.hey can get along without a teacher unless our salaries are paid." Another teacher expressed herself as believing the tuition plan dishonest. She said: . "Our principal says the plan Is to get all those parents who can to pay tuition .in the hope that enough will be raised In this way to . keep the schools, open. Then ail th others will he let In with- out paying any tuition. I'm opposed to this. I think it's dishonest." Spirited Discussion. Mrs. Annette Banker opened the spirited spir-ited discussion by mentioning the circular cir-cular letter in which parents were requested re-quested to pay $2 tuition fee. She called attention 'to the facftha.t there was $140 left as profits on the Clarke lectures, lec-tures, and $60 as proceeds from the fair. This money she declared to be the property prop-erty of the teachers' association. This money she proposed to use as a nucleus for a fflnd to be raised by popular subscription;. sub-scription;. She said that the teachers could not hope to carry the schools on the $2 plan Miss Francis Qualtrough aroused warm applause when she said: M, for one, object to going around and collecting my salary." Mrs. Banker suggested that the teachers each . contribute a half-dollar toward their own salaries. - To Arouse Public. Sentiment. . Mrs. Martha B. Jennings then said: "I. move that in case the money- is raised to keep 'the schools open until the 6th of June, each teacher give one day's salary-to that end. and that a committee be appointed to arouse public pub-lic sentiment not necessarily to collect the money." : . 'Miss Lane then expressed her sentl- meats in the forcible style In which she has been Quoted, and -added that she would not 'be unwilling to contribute one day's work if the rest of the money were forthcoming. Mrs. E. E. Shepard thought that arguments ar-guments wer useless, until the report of the principals' committee was heard, but Mrs.j Jennings' motion to give a day's pay "and appoint a committee to arouse public interest, went through on a landslide vote. Mr. Garrett moved that the executive committee meet with the principals this afternoon to discuss certain matters of Importance to teachers. Miss Scovllle moved that the executive committee be . instructed to inform the principals that the teachers refused to be responsible for. their own salaries for the last five weeks of school, but before the motion was seconded the president suggested that it would be well for the association associa-tion to not be too hasty, but to wait until the Board of Education could take some further action, as the prln- ' clpals really have nothing to do with the matter. warned Against Overwork. ' Miss Sue Clark suggested that the association as-sociation had accomplished enough for one -session. She said that Rome was not built in a day, nor could the complex com-plex school problem be settled in one meeting.- Her suggestion to adjourn . met with , approval and the session closed, to reopen next Monday afternoon after-noon at 4 o'clock.
