Show THE LOCAL REPUBLICAN PARTY. It is good to hear Republicans talk about town. A great superhuman effort must be made this coming com-ing election to indorse President Roosevelt "Why he needs special indorsement, or why some gentlemen are just now so anxious that he should be indorsed, is pretty hard to understand. ' ' ' "We had an idea that he was holding his- own pretty well; that on his record, without any assist ance from Utah Republicans, he would be able to say: '.' "Look at my record. Remember what I promised prom-ised when I took this office, and, if you can find where I have ever broken any promises, or if I have not been able to quite carry out all I proposed, at , least I trust you will give me credit for thinking I am still at work and that, all in all, I have' accomplished ac-complished more' than any President that ever warmed this chair of mine, be he Democrat, Republican Republi-can or what not." This being his position, the special anxiety of -some gentlemen calling themselves Republicans in Utah excites a suspicion that maybe they have a little personal interest in the matter; that, possibly, their love for President Roosevelt is of recent origin ; that they are not at all certain that the President will .ever hear of their impartial efforts on his account, ac-count, or that he would care a cent whether he heard or not. It is well enough to remind all classes of people not to be carried off their feet; at least, they ought not to commit themselves until Mr. Smoot ' comes up here again this year and instructs them what their opinions ought to be and who they will be expected to support. ' If Mr. Smoot cannot come in person, he might send Col. Ed Loose. That would be almost as effectual, ef-fectual, especially if he could bring a letter of introduction in-troduction from Senator Smoot. . The Republican party is all right wherever it has a" chance, but it does not add to its dignity to . have blatherskites steal its title in order to carry through some petty-larceny local scheme. That kind of Republicanism which hinges on the most barefaced and relentless despotism of modern times is of bogus order and should be rated at just exactly what it is worth and no higher j and when men who are enemies of native land steal the watchword, of the grand old party and use it as a 'shibboleth, why, we need not think any less of the Republican party, hut we may have a contempt for the impostors. |
