Show r v r re. " s r sj e-. v s . ! A ? , , - v . I '1 - COEUB D'ALENE, Idaho, Aug. . ay np here in the Northwestern part of the State, the scene of the labor troubles more than fwelve years ago, the Democratic State convention .met here today, a week after the Bepnbli- i can convention . at Pocatello. The attendance at-tendance is large, much larger, in fact, that was anticipated. The convention met at noon today with former Senator Henry Heitfeld presiding, and all prospects were that the session would be a short one. Although no slate had been pre- Fared up to 11 o'clock last night, the orecast of candidates is substantially as follows: ' For Governor, C. ' O. Stockslager, Jlailey. . . . For Secretary of State, J. M. Ben nett, Payette. For Attorney-General, C. H. Jack son. Ada county. For United States Senator, Fred Dubois, Du-bois, Blackfoot. For Member of Congress, Bees Hat-tabaugh. Hat-tabaugh. Grsngeville. - For Superintendent of Public Instruction, In-struction, IL H. Barton, Coeur d'Alene, Helen Caston, Boise, Perineal French, Hailey. South Well Represented," Full delegations are present from counties in the extreme southern and southwestern part of the State, most of whom had to travel 800 miles to get here, part f the distance by stage. The round trip, of 1600 miles -was impelled im-pelled by intense desire, in most cases to work for the overthrow of Mormon-dom Mormon-dom in the election and for the reelection re-election of Senator Dubois. Committed Against Vormonlsm. The Mormon question was threshed out in conferences, in committee room and lobby all day Sunday. Where at first there was an evidence of some strength on the part of the conservative conserva-tive element, which opposes any radical radi-cal resolution against the Mormons, there is no longer any semblance of any real opposition. - H. L. Evans of Oneida county, a recognized rec-ognized leader of the conservatives, who waged a memorable fight in behalf of the Mormons at the last State convention, con-vention, admitted last night that resistance re-sistance in the present convention was hopeless. Disfranchisement Urged. Thus it is assured in advance that a resolution will be adopted at this convention con-vention aimed at the total disfranchisement disfranchise-ment of the Mormon vote- It will specifically spe-cifically pledge the Democratic party, if given control of the Legislature, to re-enact the statute requiring all voters vot-ers to register an oath that they are not polygamists and swearing that they do not place allegiance to their church above that to their country. Dubois Approves It. This resolution will be adopted at the instance of Senator Dubois, in the full knowledge that it will estrange the Mormon vote. Mr. Evans points out that this will be a serious matter, as ninety per cent of the Democrats in Southern Idaho are Mormons. To this Senator Dubois replies that the Mormons are neither Democrats nor Republicans, and that they vote as their church leaders decree. He contends con-tends that they all voted the Bepubli-can Bepubli-can ticket at the last election. The Democrats realize that they are sacrificing the Mormon vote hopelessly, but they do so in the hope -that enough-Bepublicans enough-Bepublicans will be attracted to their standard from the Gentile faction of that party to more than offset the de-1 fection from Democratic ranks. |
