' As has been printed, 'George Edgar, the fireman, was killed, and Joseph G. Bywater, the engineer, had his right thigh broken. ' The passenger train dashed through an open switch about 300 yards from the Park City station. Theenglne overturned over-turned and crushed the fireman. Amid the hissing steam and burning coals Ensineer; Bywater shut oft steam, thereby saving the whole train from wrecking. As it was, many in the coaches were badly shaken up. including some well-known well-known ball players. Among those hurt were "Happy Jack" Thornton and Dar- .... i by O'Brien, formerly of the Salt Lake team, and Manager Stoney of the Logan Lo-gan team. The Logan team was on Its way to Bait Lake, having just finished a game at Park City with-the home team. . Credit' is duer George Splllman, a. Park City ball player, for his work in rescuing Engineer Bywater from his perilous condition as the driver was in danger of being scalded to death. Bywater is still in the hospital at Park City. The body of Fireman Edgar Ed-gar was brought to his home at No. 443 West Seventh South street, this city, this morning. He had been seven years on this run, and is survived by a widow, and six children,, five boys and one girl. An investigation is now going on, as to how the switch came to be "open.": The same train had passed over this switch three times during the day. There was no sidetracking , and the swjtch was supposed to be "locked.". Who "threw the switch" is unknown. j |
