Jan. 10, Alarm amounting to panic has been caused ln low lying districts, of Norfolk by an outbreak of "spotted fever" at Flncham, where one death has resulted and seven cases are under treatment. The request of Dr. Masson, the medical medi-cal officer, that he have a free hand to deal with the epidemic, has been at once granted by the district council, and a special report has been sent to the local government board. The farm servant girl, who succumbed suc-cumbed to the disease, was burled on the day following her death. Doctors have lately been much preoccupied pre-occupied with this strange disease, the epidemics of which are difficult to explain. ex-plain. "Spotted fever Is caused by the micrococcus mi-crococcus capsulatus Intra cellularis." said a specialist yesterday. "This microcosm mi-crocosm causes spots on the body and fever. "Like Influenza, It Is very Infectious, especially In cold weather. Indeed, In this winter I consider it so dangerous that it Is very likely to spread, especially espe-cially ln the fen districts near the scene of the outbreak. It probably came from Germany, where there was a serious outbreak last winter. "Chlllren are the chief sufferers. Tou can easily understand bow dangerous It Is when I say that the death rate from cerebro-splnal meningitis or 'spotted 'spot-ted fever,' Is about three per thousand of the population. This is In spite of the fact that its visits are so rare." |
