Show DEAD BANDIT PROVES TO BE YOUNG SOCIETY MAN . i i I. Daring Hold-Up of Gambling House, Followed - by Slaying of the Robber, 8AN J08E, Cal., April 23. A masked man, armed with two revolvers, entered en-tered the rooms of the Del Monte Social .club at an early hour Saturday morning and, after lining up against the wall six men who were In the rooms at the time, took a diamond ring valued at $900 from one of the men, grabbed up $350 or (MO from the table, then backed out of the room. After a pursuit by cltisens and police lasting an hour, during which more than thirty shots were exchanged, the robber was finally killed. ' Upon Investigation the dead man was found to be Bert Thorn-dyke,' Thorn-dyke,' a prominent young man of this city. It was About 1 o'clock when the doorkeeper door-keeper answered the knock at the door, and on opening it found himself looking Into the barrel of a big six-shooter. He was backed Into a side room and the robber rob-ber entered the main reception room, where six members of the club were sitting. sit-ting. The intruder wore a long duster and overalls and a red bandana covered his face. The only words he uttered duriag his maneuvers 'were, "Hands up!" He flourished a pistol in each hand and motioned mo-tioned all the snen Into a corner. He then proceeded to help himself to a stack of coin on one of the tables, and going over I to the proprietor motioned for him to give J ovena larje diamond ring which the robber rob-ber had noticed on h!s finger. The ring was promptly handed to him. The robber then backrd out of the place, keeping the men covered with his gun, and, gaining the street, started to run. The men in the club started in pursuit. The police and Sheriffs office were notified noti-fied immediately and a large squad of officers of-ficers were on the trail. One of the clubmen club-men led the chase and fired two shots at V the fie in it robber. - - 1 Police Officer Swansoa took up the pursuit pur-suit at Fountain street, and whenever he caught slpht of the fugitive ha would fire at him. Swanson trained on his man. and at the corner of Third and San Fernando the robber, hard pressed, turned on the offlrof and each sent a volley of bullets at the other. Swanson escaped unhurt and apparently the robber was not hit. He continued his flight and soon others joined In the chase and several of the other officers fired at the fleeing man. - Finally all trace was lost, and after a search of half an hour two pistol shots were heard coming from beneath a near-by residence. Upon investigation it was found that the robber was in his depth rtruggles beneath be-neath the house. He still clutched both pistols In his hands. It was found that the man was wounded in -four places, three shots taking effect In the head and the other in the fleshy part of the left arm. . . , . From all appearances two of the shots had been inflicted by the officers, while the other two wounda must have been caused by himself after he found that It would be Impossible to escape. He died soon after at the receiving hospital. Thorndyke was one of the best known young men In this city, he having resided here for yeans. He is well connected, his mother-ln-law being Mrs. O. M. Bruce, a wealthy widow residing on Stockton avenue, ave-nue, with whom Thorndyke, his wife and little child lived. Thorndyke's mother is also a wealthy widow of Stockton. He has a brother who la a prominent artist on the New York American. |
