SALT LAKER IT1 im r.-- f - BETTER SMELTER RATE The Mammoth Mining company's contract with the American Smelting and Refining company expires March 1st. After that date the Mammoth management will be frse to find a new market for its product, and unless better smelter rates can be secured than those row in effect with the American, the mine will remain closed indefinitely. This is the substance of a statement made by an official 'of the Mammoth today. For two and n half years the Mammoth has been operating, with scarcely no profits, notwithstanding the fact that the company's ores average between $10 and $12 per ton. Th- - enormous treatment charges, the management says, have eaten up what should have been profits to the Mammoth shareholders, and Manager Mclntyre doesn't propose to rob the mine any longer unless a more advantageous smelter rate can be secured. of the Mammoth are The considering the advisability of building a smelting plant of their own at the mine, but this action will not be taken except as a last resource, and it will not be decided upon until after bids have been received from al the local smelters. The outcome of the Mammoth company's smelter troubles is to be watched for with interest by not a concerns, which are experiencing similar difficulties. ft Chicago Cattle. .. t'atlle R't eit t Feb.
