P TTTnrT' TURNED ON HIS HEEL SMALLPOX PATIENT MAKES 0 AND LEFT ROOSEVELT ESCAPE FROM HOSPITAL - f 3 t5TAqU5CD 1004 - - Little Incident at White House in Which a Rebuked the President. INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 5. There Is much comment here among Republicans over an incident which occurred at the White House last week, in which President Roosevelt was a central figure, and of which M."D. Tackett, a Republican of Greensburg, was a witness, and it was remarked by those who heard the recital that it was another evidence of want of tact on the part of the President. Mr. Tackett called upon the President in company with Congressman Watson, and just before they entered two gentlemen from St. Joseph, Mo., were introduced to the President. Addressing one of them the President said: ''You have a pretty warm postoffice fight in St. Joseph, I believe." "Yes," said the Missourlan, "and it is that about which I want to talk with you when you are at leisure." "All right," said the President. "This is as good a place as any. What have you to say?" The Missourian spoke in high terms of the candidate he favored, saying that he was equipped in every "way for the office, was very popular with the Republicans and the Democrats alike and was generally considered to be the best man for the place. The President listened till he got through, and then looking him in the face, said: "Now you know and I know that Mr. (mentioning the name of the ether candidate) is the best man lor ' man Ilrown found A.
