William Goebel, January Democratic contestant for the office of Governor of Kentucky, was shot while walking in the Statehouse grounds at Frankfort, dying two days later. Before his death the Democratic majority of the Legislature in secret session declared him Governor and he took the oath of office. William S. Taylor, Republican, had been awarded the certificate of election and was in office. Caleb Towers vvas Secretary of State, a contest also was later pending for that office,of which contest against decided by the board him. Taylor, Caeb Powers, John L. Towers, his brother; Henry Youtsey, a clerk in the Auditor's office; Charles Finley, former Secretary of State; James Howard, Wharton Berry Howard, W. H. Culton, Golden and several others were indicted on a charere of conspiracy to muruer Goebel. The shot, it was claimed, was fired from ambush in the private office of Powers. Powers had left Frankfort an hour before the shooting took place and was on his way to Louisville. The contest over the Governorship was an exciting one and many armed adherents of both sides were In Frank fort during its progress. Taylor ordered out the State troops after the shooting of Goebel, issued a proclama tion adjourring the Legislature to meet at a later date In London, Ky., and placing a cordor of soldiers about the State buildings. The Democrats of the Legi: lature ignored the Governor's order, met In secret, declared Goebel Governor and adjournal to Louisville. After Goebel's death J. C. W. Beckham, the Demo cratic contestant for Lieutenant-Go- v rrnor. was sworn in as Governor and rival State governments were main tained. Tavlor fled to Indiana and two Governors of that State have since re fused to honor requisitions for his re turn to Kentucky to answer to tho con s n r a c y indictment. Of those indicted for complicity in Goebel's murder, two have been acthree convicted. Henry quitted and to life imprisonv, as sentenced Youtsey ment and did not take an appeal. Sine' his incarceration he has testified against both c'akb Powers and Jam' s Howard, Wharton Golden and V, H. Culton turned State's evidence. Howard was first given a death sentence, the second time life imprisonment, and the third, a life sentence, on which an appeal is now pending, life. Powers' first two trials resulted in life sentences, and in his third trial the death penalty is now adjudged. In the trial just closed.
