Show T Jtl e Salt Lake Telegram. AD SEA HAS BEEN Great Fill on Lucin Cutoff Has Aided the Bear River to Effect Wonderful Change. WORLD-FAMOU- 00 160 square miles in area, has recently Been converted Into a fresh water lake. The basin, ten miles wide and sixteen miles long, lying between the n shore on the east and the Promontory rang of hilla on tha west, has been completely cut off from the main portion of Salt lake by a fill eight miles in length recently constructed by the Southern Pacific Railroad company. This fill la a portion of the now umous Xrticia cut-of- f. Prior to its completion the waters in the basin were as salty as in other parts of the lake, now they are nearly fresh, a matter and it is of a short time until all only trace of salt will have disappeared. This peculiar transformation was "brcught about slowly and was not noticed until a short time ago, when a railroad employee went for a swim and upon entering the water was greatly surprised to discover that what he believed to be brine was instead sweet 0 Og-de- acres upon acres of alkali wastes. These are of little value now, but in time the alkali will be washed from them and they can be reclaimed and irrigated with water from the lake.
