He died at f o'clock this morning in the old city jail, of what is supposed to have been acute alcoholism, but what may prove to have been poison, administered by another of the prisoners. Mike had been a trusty at the old jail for the greater part of the past ten years ,and knew no other home. When Mike Boyle died it Avas not, as people usually die, in a comfortable room, on a bed, but it was on the hard boards that form the flooring of the old officers' quarters in the city hall. He died without the consoling' pres ence of a priest or confessor, when but a few days ago he said, while seemingly in his ordinary health, that all he wanted when he died would be to have a priest at his bedside. He did not have the priest he did not have the bed. Boyle was a familiar figure around the old city hall. He was as polite as the proverbial Frenchman, and was probably the least troublesome prisoner ever confined in the city's miserable pest hole, dignified by the name of a city jail. Mike Boyle's one besetting sin was strong drink. In all the ten years that he has frequented the city hall, not six months in all has he been at liberty. He was arrested the last time on August Sth, by Patrolman Gulbranson, on the usual charge, that of being drunk.
