Show A GREAT, GOOD MAN DEAD. The death of the Hon. Robert R. Ilitt is a national na-tional loss. He was only a little removed from a great statesman ; he was a fine scholar ; his residence abroad in the diplomatic corps gave him enlarged knowledge of foreign affairs ; he was one of the truest tru-est Americans in the land and one of the most lovable lov-able of men. He will be greatly mourned in Illinois his own State and he will be greatly missed in the House of Representatives. He was a great and a most lovable man. He would have received the nomination for Vice-President Vice-President in 1904, except that in the adjustment it was thought it would be better to have a nominee from Indiana than from Illinois. A great many of our people will remember when Mr. Hitt was here with the Hon. Thomas Reed some fifteen years ago. A special train was made up to take the two distinguished gentlemen to Park City and it was a most enjoyable day to some scores of our people. Reed and Hitt were a pair of great souls. They were very close friends in life and both were called away before their time. |
