Residents Grateful Before After Zoning laws create problems in People's Freeway area, with1 industry located next to residental property. The People's Freeway area was treated to a "clean-up- creating environmental problems campaign by University of Utah students on October 14. Entire houses were painted, lawns were raked, and trash was hauled away in a dedicated effort to brighten up the neighborhood. The area covered ran from 8th South to 9th South and West Temple to 2nd West. Residents property " welcomed the friendly, hard-workin- g students and expressed appreciation for their efforts. Mayor Jake Garn and Governor Calvin L. Rampton recently toured the People's Freeway area to gain a first hand impression of the problems of the area and the improvements that have been made. Zoning is seemingly the single most important issue in this neighborhood. Much of the area has been eaten away for industrial and commercial development, and remaining residential is taxed as potential commercial and industrial property, burdening homeowners with excessively high taxes. Low cost housing non-existe- nt is almost in the People's Freeway area. Social problems exist -- unemployment, lack of education and need for more social services in the area, but residents in general express hope for their neighborhood and a willingness to work together and bring about improvements. Ina Anderson, Secretary of the People's Freeway Board, advised the staff of the Model Neighborhood News that this council meets every Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Peopl's Freeway Center at 568 South Second West and residents of the area as well as anyone else interested are welcome to attend. |
