Take a Number is an arithmetic book in verse. More than a counting book, the poems in this volume talk about sets and division, digits and multiplication. These beautifully illustrated books may be borrowed from the Children's Room of the Salt Lake City Public Library, 209 East 5th South. Isaac Beshevis Singer is the subject of this week's Spotlight in the Children's Room of the Salt Lake City Public Library. Having written only for adults for many years, Mr. Singer has recently won both popular and critical acclaim for his books for children. Many of his tales are based on old Jewish Defter St. stories, and in others he has taken elements from forklore to create original works, but all have one thing in common: they bear the mark of a master storyteller. They combine elements of magic, comedy and superstition. All are told in simple language and illustrated by such reknowned artists as Maurice Sendak, Nonny Hogrograin and Margon Zemach. When Shlemiel Went to Warsaw and Other Stories is a collection of 8 tales, several of which deal with Shlemiel, and the other citizens of Chelm, a town inhabited only by fools. In the title story ,'Shemiel has decided to walk to Warsaw and by nightfall has arrived only at the outskirts of Chelm. To mark his way, he places his boots in the direction he's been traveling but during the night a prankster reverses them. In the morning, Shlemiel goes on his way and is amazed to discover a town exactly like the one he's just left, a house exactly like his own, and, most wondrous of all, a Mrs. Shlemiel and family just like the one he said good-byto yesterday. Since the Elders of the town who are called on to explain the situation are no smarter than he, the results are hilarious. Other books by Mr. Singer include The Fearsome Inn and Zlateh the Goat and Other Stories available at the Salt Lake City Public Library 209 East 5th South. e Swimming Pools Most Salt Lake County pools will be open all summer long.
