Show Page 7 something to present to the parole board when the time comes. A good example of this kind of mis-trus- t and looking to other inmates for help is the case cf a young man at the Utah State Inmates Can't Prison. He recently appeared before the parole board and rehearing instead of a parole date. He was told by the Warden of the prison that if he keeps a good institutional record and learns a vocation he may be released next year. The Warden was sincere, and even though it wasn't a promise, it gave the inmate something to look forward to and a lot of hope that he would be released the following year. The inmate is very young and a trade would probably be the best thing to help him stay out of prison. received Help Each Other by Andrew Kish In today's world there are some individuals who constantly out of their own way to help others. We see this in business, in our neighborhoods, schools, the Armed Forces and sometimes, even in correctional facilities. The individuals who do these go good deeds are considered humanitarians, except those who are incarcerated in a correctional facility. When individuals who are incarcerated try to help other inmates they are often presumed to or seeking only personal recognition. Many times, and all too often, it will be noted that one inmate can relate better with another inmate than an official of the institution is able to. When the officials of the institution notice that an inmate is trying to help another inmate, he is told to stop and simply serve his own time. If the helpful inmate chooses to ignore this request, it could be homosexual, prove to be detrimental to his own well being. If he has a parole date it may be jeopardized and if he hasn't received a parole date as of yet, the officials of the institution could prolong his receiving one. What reason do the officials have to discourage this kind of meaningful interchange between inmates? Why shouldn't an inmate develop qualities that will make him a better citizen when he is released - such as learning to help others? Is the staff jealous or worried about inmates achieving goals without the their assistance? Why must a person be labeled as a homosexual just because he is inmate and is close to another trying to help him learn a vocation and maintain a good institutional record so he can stay out of prison once he is given the opportunity for a parole? A contributing factor to why inmates would rather have another inmate give assistance is the tremendous amount of mis-trubetween inmates and the members of the institutional staff. Promises are made to inmates by staff members which aren't kept and just as it is in the world outside these walls, we will sometimes listen to our friends and peers rather than an "authority. Because of this the nmate must learn how to be a manipulator. He has to learn how to lie and cheat just so he can satisfy the staff members. The average inmate must rely on other inmates to help him struggle through the system so he will have st mis-trus- t, The HOROSCOPE FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 17 , 1973 ARIES 'March 21 - April 19 Keep close track of all a The inmate is intent on fulfilling the obligation and immediately began to enroll in a vocational training course. But for all his good intentions, he is informed that he cannot take the vocational course until he has served another year or more. The inmate pleads with his caseworker, members of the staff, and others that may be able to help him, but to no avail. He must serve at least one more year before he can take the course. This sort of thing occurs time and again and it is only building up a bigger gap of mis trust between the inmates and the staff. The institution offers a variety of programs for the inmates; but most inmates are reluctant to get involved because the promises that are given to them for completing a program are not kept.
