When I was a little girl, (that doesnt seem very long ago to me, but it really is) I lived in a small community. Right in the center of this community was a little school house. During the day on weekdays, children went to school in the building. On week nights we went to basketball games, had dances, weddings, plays and parties in the building; and in the summer the grounds provided a place for baseball games. On election day, the people went there to vote, and if there was a problem in the community everyone went there to discuss it. 'This use of school and grounds was probably the first type of a community school program.
