Show A NEW COPPER DISTRICT henry M lancaster the mining engineer from rathdrum Rath drum idaho is spending a few days in the city says the review of spokane wash mr lancaster has just returned from a three months trip to the headwaters of the north fork of the clear water and the st joseph rivers where he was looking after mining property for butte mont people mr lancaster ancaster sala said last night in my opinion the attention of mining men will be directed more to the interior ol of idaho within the next year than ever before the average person would scarcely belleve believe that there is so vast a country in idaho as yet almost unknown while most of the streams tributary to the st joseph and the clearwater rivers were worked for placers in early days little or no attention was paid to mining owing 0 lack of tion now however the country is just beginning to be explored for quartz and the showing made by the limited amount of work done is the best I 1 have ever seen in any district in the west gold ore assaying up in the hundreds of dollars to the ton and even thousands of dollars has been found but I 1 think the copper ores will be of more material interest to the mining public the character of this ore is similar to the ore of the rossland district but will probably average 25 to 30 per cent copper there is much copper glace in it there are no properties in this district it h abing more than 20 to 25 feet in depth development but they all have splendid showings the best way to reach the country is by way of iron mountain montana going up cedar creek and then crossing the bitter root mountains to the idaho side while the country is rather rainy and the snowfall deep in this district it is no worse than in the coeur dalene country and the matter of transportation is now a 3 problem easily solved the future of this part of the country will be watched by spokane people with much interest the district is almost where the ill III fated carlin party was camped a dozen years ago the snow that year commenced falling september 10 it is not safe for a man with horses to be in there after the middle of the mouth month there will be few men wintering there I 1 shall have two miners there on the montana copper group in which butte nen men and myself are interested the st joseph river and the north fork of the clearwater rise in that district within ten minutes walk of each other |
