and enjoyed by those who rode into the town last sunday on the first train to enter there being bein the final consummation of hopes and wishes of many years may well be likened to a mountain gem and yet it is one of the most unique and pastoral mining camps to be found in utah stock ranches farms and meadow lands dot the bottom land up and down the river as far as the eye can reach to the west prospects of the camp are a re located south of marysvale Marys vale some two oi or three miles another canyon cuts down through throng the mountain range ange r this is cottonwood canyon and about marysvale Marys vale has been noted for its numerous prospects and for its few producing mines we say few for the reason that marysvale Marys vale has not been a productive camp in the true sense of the term and yet it has several properties which have made enviable records as producers the deer trail is one of these the webster is another t while at one time a quicksilver mine situated near the deer trail almost at the mouth of cottonwood was equipped with reduction works in bullion canyon the remains of an old mill propelled by water power attest the fact that in the early daya of mining in that section ancient mines now almost forgotten paid tribute to their owners As a matter of fact however the country around around marysvale Marys vale as far as mining is concerned is a virgin field A little surface scratching 11 has been done in exploratory work but no real deep mining has been done the canyon sides and mountain tops present a network of quartz ledges large pieces of float have been found which are of often ten more t than n half j gold old pockets of ore spark ling with the yellow metal have been uncovered and yet with hardly an exception no determined effort no systematic or extensive work has been d done 0 n e t to 0 prove what these rich blossoms lead to but the indications are so favorable the outlook is so er encouraging cour that from now on now that the new railroad gives direct t and speedy contact with the markets of ON LION HILL ten miles southwest of marysvale Marys vale almost on the crest of lion hill is the park group of eight claims and a the group has an elevation of about feet the country being unbroken while the mountain sides are covered with good looking float which has become broken and detached from the strong quartz ledges which traverse the country in a northeasterly and southwesterly direction the formation on lion hill is a quartzite and contact the park ledge being strong and well defined with rugged crop pings and a dip representative of the mining review recently made a visit to marysvale Marys vale and while there made an inspection of several of its leading mines and prospects a few of which will receive attention and mention in this review of the camp it not being the intention odthe of the writer to into detail go as to the geology and formation of the district as in this issue there appears an article on the geology y of marysvale Marys vale from the able pen of prof marcus E jones AM which certainly will be e read with interest by those who are in any way identified with the mining industry ind astry of this section with a pitch of 65 degrees has been sunk to the foot level for sixty feet the shaft followed the vein on the at this point the ledge 10 flattened on its dip to a pitch of forty five degrees the shaft continuing down in the it being the intention to sink until a depth of feet is reached when a cross crosscut cut will be run to intersect the quartzite contact which dips to the southeast so uth and which 1200 feet to the northeast yields free gold and horn silver the sand from the bug holes in the quartzite being rich in native gold the st sand ind often yielding gg nuggets present but which should be worked THE CRYSTAL MINE half a mile or so west of Bri brigham allam park and situated on the brink of a dizzy precipice which drops down several hundred feet to the south bank of cottonwood creek is situated the main workings of the crystal mine one of the most extensively developed properties in the marysvale Marys vale region the group embraces eloh eighteen teen consists of a foot incline tunnel which lias has a dip to the southwest of about twelve degrees the workings having followed a contact vein between quartzite and lime the being in the quartzite the hanging wall being capped by a tra chite overflow from a huge dyke to the south on each side of this tunnel there are numerous lateral drifts which disclose large bodies of ore from one to five feet thick and which carry average values in the precious metals of 10 per cent lead 20 ounces silver and from 2 to 5 in gold to the ton large quantities of dry quartz are also blocked out which carries practically all y the same values in silver and gold but no lead at about feet from its mouth this incline tunnel enters a most remarkable and unusual formation being nothing more or less than a fossilized ocean beach the evidences as disclosed in the incline prove that subsequent to the filling of the contact the waves of an ancient ocean tore away the lime hanging wall and ore and on the quartzite floor laid down dobz a thick bed of beach sand pebbles and boulders smoothed by attrition through t centuries perhaps and afterwards cemented by the superincumbent weight and heat from the overflow of tra chite previously mentioned this geological phenomenon no doubt caused suspension of work in the in dine cline but it is possible that by driving the tunnel down through this fossil coast line ore may again be found on the other side of it to the west however different conditions are found here the quartzite dips to the west or northwest at an angle of about forty to sixty degrees the contact being quartzite and porphyry about 1000 feet northwest of the foot tunnel supt bupt S 0 james has a force of men at work running a tunnel to intersect the contact the face of this tunnel which is now in some feet is in ledge matter consisting principally of tale talc in which occurs sulphide ore run running nino 0 12 anc and I 1 up to the ton and the indications of the near pres presence nee of a fine body of good pay or ore are excell excellent eDt as physical conditions appear to be most favorable the property is equipped with a small steam hoist at the incline tunnel while a fine concentrator is located a short distance below the mine workings the motive power for which is a horse power pelton water wheel the process of ore reduction utilized by the plant however has been found inadequate in the saving of values from crystal ores and before the plant is placed in commission again it is more than likely that some process more adapted to this class of mineral will be substituted several buildings adorn the group grou pi included in which are two board 7 ing houses while a complete and well equipped assay office stands near the mill mil 1 the crystal is easily accessible by good wagon road up cottonwood canyon its location is sightly and strikingly picturesque the group i is heavily timbered and boasts of a splendid water supply both for power and culinary purposes this is looked upon as being 1 one of the leading mines of the district and under the he able supervision of mr james who is an expert miner gives promise of making a good record at
