Show WANTED MORE itis it is passing strange that so many salt lakers fail to realize what the mining industry of the state has done for this city that they have not grasped the fact that hut but for our mining interests the heavy output of our mines and the millions paid by them in dividends salt lake today would be nothing more than a country village a mere watering place on the railroad lines cuttino cutting through this country to connect with eastern and western points in any other state the people would go wild over such marvelous mineral resources over the possession of such splendid wealth producers but here in a metropolis that is environed by magnificent mining camps there is a feeling of apathy concerning the mining industry that is pitiful to behold and were it not for the advent of eastern capital of eastern investors of men who know and appreciate a good thing when they see it hardly anything would be said or known of the great mines which to say the least have made utah famous abroad even if they are accounted as but little at home the mines of utah have made salt lake what she is today a city peerless in beauty and abounding in wealth the output of our mines has erected palatial residences throughout the city and has caused the construction of modern business blocks along our main thoroughfares but for our mines the streets of zion would be unpaved and no sidewalks would keep the pedestrians from mud and filth during in stormy weather with the mining industry of the state eliminated there would be no inducement for an outsider to settle in salt lake unless he were looking for a health resort and had an inclination to throw business to the winds as no active business man looking for an opening would care to locate in a place where the support almost exclusively came from the product of the farm and the farms instead of embracing broad acres were confined to narrow valleys between high mountain ranges this being the case it is strange strange indeed that salt lake people P le do not take more interest in mining that they do not show the same activity and enthusiasm thusia sm the same interest and enterprise in this pursuit such as that which characterizes the people of our sister states it would put big money into their pockets and could they bring themselves to the point where they would give recognition to a greater extent to the advantages enjoyed by utah in this regard if they were more loyal to the leading industry of our commonwealth and less in inclined to back cap and belittle that which makes it possible for them to live in a city of the first class and to make dollars where heretofore they could only make pennies and these pennies represented in the agricultural products products of the country as the chief cir culat P ipg ing medium the utah and galena mines at fish springs have been making shipments of high grade ore of late and it is hoped that these properties will soon reach a dividend paying basis again |
