Show THE UNITED TATES STATES MINING CO S MINES in the immensity and diversity of its mineral deposits there is hardly a raining mining camp in the west that ban can justly claim to be the peer of bingham which long ago earned the appellation of the old reliable because of the heavy and steady output of its mines in fact fac t no district in this intermountain region can boast of ore zones of greater magnitude than have been uncovered in the mountains and canyons of west mountain district the wealth of the camp in the precious metals being confined between no narrow walls while the extensive operation and development of bingham mines has proven conclusively clu that these splendid bodies of gold and silver lead and copper ores go to the deep the deepest workings having failed as yet to disclose the extent of the of the camp utah has fias been greatly blessed ased and favored edthe in the possession of numerous mining camps of note a num number berof of which are famed the world over for their wealth of high grade ores for several years past a spirit of rivalry has history of at least three of the leading districts of the state bingham mercur and tintic gintic with interest being centered in one of the three at different periods mercur taking the lead three or four years ago to be e superseded superceded super ceded by tintic gintic later on now however bingham seemingly has the pole in the race for supremacy and the fact that a number of very heavy raining mining sales and transactions have been in this section of late has had the effect of attracting widespread a attention intention i to this favored locality with the development of the highland boy mine the uncovering of mammoth deposits of sulphide copper ores within its workings the erection of a smelting smelling sm elting plant by the company for the treatment of the product of these vast mineral zones and the installation of a wire tram system for the transportation of the ore from the mine to the railroad bingham has been given a new lease on life and the camp has entered upon a new era of prosperity and progression the evolution of the highland boy was a rouser for bingham a splendid demonstration it was an eye opener as it was an illustration of what could be done in this great camp with intelligent and vigorous development for dame nature was prodigal when she endowed the camp with mineral wealth leaving it to man to find the key to her treasure vaults recent disclosures proving that tha heretofore theretofore the OLD JORDAN GALENA M MINE INE AND MILL mining of bingham had been but little more than and a series of burrowing at the grassroots grass roots inspired by the success attending the development of the highland boy aggregations of capital were successful in getting in on the ground floor in some of the most richly mineralized portions of the district and the holdings of one of these syndicates at least will doubtless soon give to the camp one of the greatest producing and paying paving mines that this country has ever known one of the sensations of the present year in mining circles in utah was the purchase and consolidation a few months ago of the old jordan galena the niagara and the old telegraph mines three of the leading producing properties of bingham and three of the choicest mines of the camp and new impetus was given to mining affairs in this country when it became known that behind this enterprise were men of means experience and push W H coolidge E A dark clark C H cole and their associates well known in boston circles as the I 1 united states oil crowd with the crystallization of this purchase this consolidation came the united states mining company which it is believed will hereafter become an important factor in mining matters in this western country A few days ago the editor of THE REVIEW had the of z 5 v 0 IFA 4 R ma aft ww soft making an extended visit to the companas comp anys bingham holdings every facility being afforded him by mr james W neill general superintendent of the properties to examine closely into the merits of the different mines embraced in the consolidation while every courtesy was shown him during his sojourn in the camp by A P mayberry foreman of the old jordan galena and the niagara mines and by john P turner foreman of the old telegraph r at the old jordan galena all was life and activity and while ore extraction was not being carried on developments on a mammoth scale were being inaugurated and arrangements were being perfected to open up and exploit these properties in a manner hitherto unheard of in in the old reliable without having first inspected the underground workings of the old jordan mine it would be an impossibility to form the slightest idea the slightest conception of the magnitude of the ore bodies which are even now blocked out in the drifts tunnels and inclines of this property and although the mine has not been worked or explored below the CONTINUED ON PAGE EIGHT trie UNITED STATES MINING COS CONTINUED FROM PAGE PAGE FIVE foot level vertically THE REVIEW is informed by mr mayberry that the output of the mine in the past has been estimated at something like twenty one millions gross this might A 44 qt 4 71 1 W V lt h all nt 46 I 1 eff THE OLD TELEGRAPH LOOKING UP BEAR GULCH appear large to the uninitiated but a careful examination of the different and extensive workings of the property would soon convince the observer that the estimate is not an exaggeration ge ration and the fact that the mill tunnel workings broke into a massive body of excellent ore almost at the grass roots would easily give one an idea as to the splendid of this portion of west mountain district and a still further evidence of the magnitude of the ore deposition is to be found in the immense which one might well say embellish the different workings of the mine the old lion s den for instance while not very large turned out over net in the precious metals the ore being of high grade while the emma an illustration of which adorns this article has contributed a small fortune in imperishable imperi wealth to the channels of trade and commerce the emma presents mute but substantial evidence of what the old jordan is able to do in iii the way of the production of mineral wealth and a stranger could easily lose himself within its environments the excavation from which so much good ore was taken being seven sets or fifty feet in height ninety feet in width and one hundred and eight feet in lenoth length and still this great is sr small nall when combar compared ed to the gigantic bodies bodie s of sulphide copper ores which were left st standing linan r and intact in the mine by the former management to say nothing of the splendid reserves of silver lead ore or of the vast deposits of oxidized gold exposed in various other workings of the property after an inspection of the mine not the least interest interesting irig feature of the visit was the after dinner talk with foreman mayberry may berry who is thoroughly familiar with the formation and geology of this portion of west mountain district and who is blessed with the faculty of being able to tell what he knows in a lucid and interesting manner I 1 I 1 the consolidated properties of the united states mining company mr mayberry went on to say in answer to numerous inquiries regarding the companas comp anys holding takes in i what are termed highland and bear gil gulches ches both branches or forks of main bingham canyon beginning on the west on the divide near the dividing line between salt lake and tooele thoele counties the property extends easterly for nearly two miles and a half the tract embracing about acres being about half a mile in width the group takes in the old jordan galena the niagara and the old telegraph mines the northern light and innumerable other claims many of which aich are extensively developed and on a shipping basis the old jordan is the oldest location in the district the claim being feet in width and feet in length this claim it is stated was located in 1863 by one of general connors soldiers and by some is held to be the first mineral location ever made in utah at any rate the lode was extremely rich as will be seen from the fact that the mining was mostly done at the grassroots grass roots in the way of open cuts and trenches and it is believed by nearly every mining man conversant convers antwi with th the and formation of this portion of the camp that this claim is located on what we call the mother lode of this end of the district the formation being a contact deposit between lime and quartzite the mineralized zone varies from to feet in in width the vein matter being lime in which the ore occurs in great chutes and immense bodies the strike of the ledge being nearly east and west while its dip is about twenty six degrees to the north the pay dirt being in the form of sulphide ores of silver gold dead copper and iron and oxidized gold ores where the ironald iro iron nand and copper deposits once approached the surface at the old telegraph further surprises awaited the representative of THE REVIEW this ground ever prolific in its deposits of high grade ore has largely been worked by leasers leaders for a number of years and these men in their operations in their copper sul aphides the different workings reached by several tunnels disclosing mammoth zones of sulphide ores in quantity seemingly unlimited but estimated at least at a half a million tons the metallic contents of which will average all of 3 per cent copper 8 ounces silver and from 2 to 8 in gold to the ton while in other portions of the property there are immense deposits of oxidized ore estimated at tons blocked out and in sight which will go about 12 in silver and gold to the ton the mineral being of a character susceptible to successful treatment by the cyanide process of reduction in its equipment the consolidated property can boast of much if not nearly all of the works in the mining and milling line that the camp could claim prior to the installation stal lation of the highland boy gold mill and the reduction works of the new mammoth at the theold old jordan where there ther e is quite a settlement three steam hoists have been bee n in installed i in the past in addition to which there is a ton concentrator a ton cyanide mill machine shops and electrical department besides which there is a 9 good boarding and bunk house assay office company office and cottage at the niagara there is a small steam hoist and a cyanide mill of 50 tons daily capacity while at the old telegraph there is a fine modern steam hoist although the mine in the past has been almost entirely developed and operated by means of tunnels through which at least ten million in the precious metals have first seen the light of day all of the ores from the consolidated mines finding transportation t to 0 the railroad at bingham over a horse tramway three miles in length in the exploration of the old jordan galena present developments development are all being headed westward and connections are being made from the old workings of the mine to the surface through enlarged tunnel openings in ings s these headings are all being pushed with air drills from three different levels feet apart from these entrances and cross cuts from foot and hanging walls are being started as fast as the material excavated can be handled and by this system the ground will be systematically opened up and blocked out it isabe is the intention of the management ultimately to drive these tunnels to the intersection ter section of the vein with the great porphyry dyke which faults the entire formation feet ahead of the present workings in dr driving ivino this distance the ore bodies known to exist on the surface in the excelsior orphan boy northern light and other claims will be cut at depths varying from to feet As soon as the spring water which has been unusually heavy this season subsides the lowest levels of the old jordan incline will be and the development of a vast body of ore encountered on this level which is feet below the mill tunnel will be carried on with renewed vigor and from here also a drift will be run to the west As all this work will render further sinking ing on this incline impossible it is the intention to sink a new incline of large dimensions which will be equipped with the best modern machinery and this incline will be put down to a greater depth than has yet been attained at any point in the property the diminution of the spring flow of water will also enable the manao management ement to take up the development of the famous galena fissure the old shaft will be re timbered it will also be equipped with a modern steam hoist when the workings will be sunk several hundred feet deeper As the ores of the galena have always been of high grade there is no reason to doubt their continuance to greater depth at the old telegraph the campaign of development has been marked out on much the same lines and here as at the old jordan galena developments westward will be taken up principally through the grecian bend tunnel which has been re timbered and straightened for almost its entire length and into the vein the new grade established the eastern end of the mine will be developed through the tribune tunnel it was this portion of the mine which in the old halcyon days yielded such rich harvests of high hiah grade carbonate ores the immense dumps and caved openings on the surface testifying to the vast amount of this ore which has been taken from this portion of the consolidated property in the past the sulphide ores in the old telegraph have never been touched on this side of the mine and they should certainly make a bonanza the ore bodies in the niagara za group are apparently of lesser extent but this is only a supposition owing to less extensive development the general character of the ores of the mother lode is about the same ame s 1 the base being parities throughout carrying copper values the accidental enrichments enrich ments being pockets of lead le adores ores thus these ores constitute over and above their contents in the precious and base metals a valuable iron flux with which other ores may be profitably smelted smelter smelt ed and it is no exaggeration to say that there is a million tons of this material now exposed in the workings of the consolidated property and this amount of flux will enable the company to handle at least half a million tons of ores such are produced by the mines of tintic gintic district to this end it is the intent and purpose of the company to erect smelting smelling sm elting works of large capacity not less than tons per day this plant will be erected on the companas comp anys smelter site at west jordan and in addition the company will doubtless build an electric tramway from its mines to the railroad at lower bingham bingham at the present time is the scene of wonderful activity in mining in its various phases and gigantic enter enterprises pries
