Show WHICH PAYS THE MOST DIVIDENDS the mining record of colorado aprin sprin springs S states that the salt lake mining review seems to derive great pleasure in its claim that utah in 1902 paid more in dividends than colorado the record then goes on to say that the mining review has another guess coming as out of a production of more than for the period mentioned colorado mines surely have paid more than in dividends the review would not willingly or knowingly belittle in any way the magnificent ent mining industry of our sister state nor does it give us pleasure to make comparisons pari Parl sons between utah and colorado which would in any way injure colorado or which would reflect upon her producing mines and dividend payers still take a young and aspiring state like utah whose mining industry is still in its infancy whose splendid mineral resources are but little known to the outside world and let i if become evident that her mines are the equal to those of old and proved mining sections that they are paying as much if not more in dividends than are her neighbors and no one can blame her if she elevates her chin a little her hair lifts her skirts coquettishly and ana intimates to her senior sister that she is direct in line to succeed her in public estimation and popularity As a matter of fact utah produced about in the precious metals during the year 1902 duri during ng which time her mines disbursed in dividends the record states that for the same period colorado mines produced from all reports printed and obtainable however the dividends for colorado mines for 1902 amounted to but and a comparison of the payments shows that utah leads colorado in this respect by over a million if this is incorrect the record will please furnish the exact figures and the mining review will take pleasure in making the amende honorable we take it that the record in explaining the situation will say that a good many colorado mining companies do not make public their dividend payments and that many small properties owned by individual operators withhold their net earnings as private business and that these amounts if added to the sum total alleged to have been paid by colorado mines during the year 1902 would have greatly swelled the amount stated in anticipation the mining review will state that the same condition holds good in utah and that if the private corporations and individual utah mining operators would make public their dividend payments and net gains for the year in question the exact figures would be nearer five than over four and a quarter millions As has been previously stated in these columns it is not the production the tonnage that counts in mining operations but the net earnings the grand total paid out in dividends to shareholders and the th e net profits profit accruing to small operators and mine owners this being the case utah then with her production of and dividend payments of over four and a quarter millions for the year 1902 is the equal if not a greater mining state than colorado with her forty eight million in production and an alleged dividend disbursement of three and a quarter million for the same year we do not want to be thought egotistical but still we say and say it with pride that colorado in her greatest camps is not possessed of a mine that pays monthly in dividends utah has two such mines in one camp and twelve of our mines have paid more in dividends during the past year than have forty two colorado producers and dividend payers within the same time As a dividend paying state utah stands next to Mont montana dua which ranks first if the record can prove the contrary to our satisfaction we will gladly correct any error we have mado madia in any of the above statements |
