Show REPORTS at a banquet given recently by the gov arning board of the salt take lake stock exchange to the press of this city the announcement was made that it was the intention of the board to try if possible to induce the next session of the state legislature to pass a bill making it obligatory upon mining companies in utah to make annual or semiannual semi annual reports relative to the condition physically of their properties and of their financial standing such a measure we sincerely believe would be vastly beneficial to the mining in austry of the state and also be the means of protecting investors to a very largo large extent and if the stock exchange can br brang about the enactment of such a law it will have dote done much towards establishing the legitimacy rol of mining and in protecting the public from the ravages of the sharper and the floating of worse than worthless mining securities S ur 1 t e quite a number of utah mining companies have made annual reports yearly a and n d their r action in this direction has met mei with the hearty approbation and commendation of our le leading adino citizens if this course is good without compulsion how bow much better it would be if all companies were compelled by low law to make public once or twice a year facts and figures in which every dealer in stocks is interested te but which in a great many ansta iastan cas are al almost most unobtainable if not absolutely so banks are required to make annual or ar sami annual statements and in their character they tb ey are no more I 1 public institutions than are mining companies whose shares asa as a general thing are held by hundreds if not nod b by y thousands the mining public has almost absolute confidence in the mining companies making public statements as to their condition what then should deter every company from complying with such a demand unless a desire to suppress matters which would be regarded in an unfavorable manner were the searchlight of publicity to be bd thrown upon them the mining review favors the measure and trusts that the stock exchange will be able to see it crystallized into a law before the adjournment of the next state legislature |
