exploration of its oil holdings in the locality mentioned while a number of big syndicates are in the field making many locations castle dale progress ira browning and H P returned from the sinbad oil fields monday morning where together with C R johnson of salt lake frank mandel of hailey idaho and harry farrer of green river they located about 2000 acres of oil lands johnson and mandel who are experienced mining men and were here representing a syndicate appeared to be highly pleased with the country and oil prospects they took out samples of oil which they will have hav e analyzed by expert chemists S F mining and engineering review work is progressing rapidly at the well of of the arroyo seco oil and development company on see sec 16 19 6 monterey co it is now between and feet deep and everything looks exceedingly well H R earle the secretary has just returned from the well which he saw started and well under way he also visited the entire district and has returned more oil belt or anticline which has a trend northwesterly and southeasterly this ground is located between the garn well or spring where the oil and gas bubble out of the ground and flow on the surface of the water and the sunday morning property where the oil oozes out of the ground and percolates the sandstone strata on the e surface on claim every of the land owned by this company can be found numerous discovery points such as oil sand etc the ground has been examined by numerous experts from california colorado and pennsylvania who pronounce it one of the best pieces of land in the green river oil fields on the oil belt castle dale progress on his return from price yesterday george yv brandon found a telephone call awaiting him to come to price at ai once at a late hour last night he started north mr brandon ls is interested in some of the most valuable e oil land yet located in the sinbad valley land on which both black and a deep yellow oil seeps out in almost a flow and it was in refer reference euce to a deal for this land that he was called north A california oil man had examined it and is willing t to spend some money to develop it providing he can secure a large interest camera kemmerer wyo JB A virtue and E mccarrick of salt lake city who are respectively secretary and president of the utah wyoming oil company are in the fossil district again this week looking over their property there they are accompanied by colonel mitchell an oil expert of international reputation colonel mitchell has been identified with the exploration of oil fields in several foreign countries and is probably the most able judge of the character character of our prospects of any one who has been in the field thus far after a careful inspection of the district distri qt he pronounces the outlook very brilliant S F mining and engineering review the standard consolidated oil and land company is preparing to receive bids for the erection of its derricks bunk houses etc its first derricks will be erected on section 1928 39 19 28 28 in the kern river kiver district its stock which was placed on the market at 10 cents per share is meeting with a large demand from investors who are conversant with the location of this companas comp anys property and its directorate it is the intention of this company to commence and complete its developing work as rapidly as possible the aim in view being the payment of dividends to their stockholders as soon as energetic efforts make the same a possibility R R hill representing the anryo seco oil development company of monterey county california arrived in the city a few days ago and has opened a branch office of the company in in the D P F walker block mr hill reports that the oil interests throughout california have not abated in the least and that men of moderate modera e means have through small investments made snug fortunes others have become immensely wealthy while very few have lost money the company represented by mr hill aill under date of may report that they are now down feet with the best indications the gas is coming up so strong that they have had to take off the night shift for fear of fire the companies whose lands adjoin the arroyo seco are in oil and are getting from ten to fifty barrels per day mr hill is well posted on the oil fields of california and will be pleased to furnish any information desired the editor of the mining review has known him for a year or more and is pleased to state that he is an honorable and reliable gentleman with whom it will be a pleasure to transact business W I 1 snyder george westervelt Westervel fc and A A sweet of this city and judge L W shurtliff of ogden are interested in a acre tract of oil land in carbon county twelve or fourteen miles west and a little south of colton and about three miles from what is known as daniels ranch on this tract there is an oil spring which flows so it is said from one to three barrels a day the flow according to chemists report being maltha a liquid form of asphaltum the product being free from sand or grit of any kind these gentlemen have also located another tract in the near vicinity as well as some sand rock bearing oil near soldier summit the holdings first mentioned are being surveyed and will doubtless soon form the basis for an incorporation S G stromme of bakersfield cala is making a careful examination of oil resources and is more than pleased with what he has seen during his visit to the green river and the sinbad oil fields mr stromme who is an expert drillman and an experienced oil operator is in this section in the interests of royald royal D laidlaw and charles D lee of Backers field prominent in california oil circles and he is confident that within the boundaries of our state he will be able to find bonanza propositions for his people indeed he is confident that oil of excellent quality and in great quantity will be found in the green river country as well as at sinbad thirty five miles southwest of green river and he is satisfied that drilling at the latter place will begin at an early day mr insists that good rigs should be secured before any attempt is made to sink for oil as with poor and inefficient machinery failure is almost sure to result in speaking of the surface indications in utah fields mr stromme says that they are much better than in any of the california camps and that there should be millions in oil in this country earnest work being necessary however to show the location of the oil measures dr clarence barrett of this city has in invented a process for the extraction of oil from oil sand and shale by leaching for which an application has been made for letters patent dr barrett Barret fc is a member of the oil company of this city the property of the association adjoining the oil lands of the white star oil company in utah county near mill fork siding by tests made with his leaching process dr barrett has demonstrated that he can extract the oil from the oil sands and shale from the company companas comp anys Is property at a cost of but little more than a dollar a ton the plant which it is proposed to construct as soon as the patents are issued will cost in the neighborhood of and it is estimated that the works w will ill handle fifty tons of oil sand daily which should yield 1600 gallons of oil all of which has been contracted for by salt lake dealers of every thirty gallons of this oil the doctor says there is but three gallons of illuminating oil the balance being valve oil with a commercial value of about 50 cents a gallon the new method of leaching 0 will necessitate the using of large quantities of sulphuric acid which could be supplied by home smelters shelters sm elters from waste and sulphurous gases but whether the smelter management can be induced to pay attention to this industry remains to be seen the mining review recently had the pleasure of an interview with prof L H mitchell the eminent geologist regarding the new oil fields near fossil wyo on the union pacific in speaking of these new oil discoveries prof mitchell stated that he found every indication of the existence of oil in south twin creek valley within a short distance from fossil the oil fields in this section being about five or six miles in an easterly and westerly direction and so far as explored about three miles in a northerly and southerly direction the formation being eocene by more or less folded rock of the upper cretaceous and he is confident that the oil will be found to exist in the upper cretaceous stratas of bituminous shale and calcar ibus sandstone were also noted in the eocene tertiary and also volatile petroleum gases so far as demonstrated from oil long exposed to atmospheric action the product of these fields is a high grade lubricant prof mitchell acted in the capacity of expert for the utah wyoming oil fuel company of this city and expresses himself as being well pleased with geological conditions the company owns between 1400 and 1500 acres its group being within a quarter of a mile from the first well driven in the district which is a flowing well in the valley mentioned there are seven oil springs giving off oil and gas sufficient to prove the existence of an oil body in the cretaceous formation economically no this is an excellent field as it is on the railroad and but two or three miles from coal the people in that section are enthusiastic over the outlook for an oil boom in the near future |
