smelling Sm elting refining company at kansas city but now he is devoting a great deal of his time in prospecting in grand county this state being interested in promising property in the san rafael mountains as well as in oil claims at green river near his home he speaks most encouragingly of the outlook for oil discoveries in the green river country A new undertaking by the united states geological survey is the collection of statistics pertaining to the annual output of gold and silver in the united states and representatives of the survey have been assigned to the various mineral bearing portions of the country the territory comprising utah and arizona will be in charge of victor C heikes this new move on the part of the survey is to be a permanent one the gathering and compilation pi lation of statistics concerning 6 the gold and silver iver 8 output of the country to be independent and yet supplementary to the report issued annually by the director of the mint mr air heikes is now in salt lake and will enter upon the duties of bf his office at once he is no stranger to the mining fraternity of this western country and is rated as being 1 one of the most talented and able metallurgists in the united states leaving utah several years ago mr heikes served as assistant chief of the department of mines for colorado at the columbian exposition after which he was assistant and acting director of the department part ment of mines and metallurgy in behalf of the united states at the paris exposition his work here will willmae be invaluable to the welfare of the mining industry and his many friends are more than pleased that the government has assigned him to this field |
