Show Mr. Fabian's Lecture-. The lecture on Charles Dickens by Mr. B-jiithatn Fabian, lat evening, even-ing, at Independence Hal!, was listened to by a very respectable and intelligent audience. Mr. Fabian Fa-bian relatid that he was born and lived at Chatham, the native town of Dickens, for fifteen ycirs, which fact imparted i:u unusual interest to his reminiscences of the oarly life of the great novelist. Alter relating the leading events in Dickens' career, and sketching with genial and hearty reverence his character in the various deportments of life, he proceeded in very appropriate and graceful language to delineate some of the strong points in his literary career, a.-; illustrated in his published works, showing that he excelled as a poet no less than as a novelist, and that he stood pre-eminent in whatever he : undertook. In conclusion, Mr. Fabian read quite ellectively several passages from Dickens' works, and was frequently applauded dining the lecture. |
