Show l.t'MUKIt. Mr. J). W. rarkhurst, l ho oniTgetio lunibor merchant, Blurt this inoining for Chii'agu on business. Kioni the fact that this etitlonmn lias been exclusively doing a lumber business busi-ness wilh tlui Truokeo region, and that ho is now mining his attention eastward, wo would infer something is up. Wo have heard that tho collection collec-tion of stumpago in tho west is exercising exer-cising a s.trong inlluenco adverse to tho lumber business of the Sierras, tho tax being enl'oiced'with unusual strictness. A lit llo time ago when wo called attention at-tention to tho 1'aet that there was dillicully in procuring lumber hero to meet the demand, some persous thought we were exaggerating matters; but if tho requirements of tho coming season do not exceed tho supply easily and promptly available, wo will be agreeably disappointed. Are these trips east of Mr. l'aikhurst indicative of Michigan and Minnesota lumber being brought as far west as tho Great Basin? Tho attention of tho Congressional Con-gressional delegation from tho Pacific Coast should bo directed to tho opera tions by which certain timber lands in the west are being effectually closed to lumber men, retarding the growth of settlements and thereby keeping the publio-lauds of government less valuable valu-able than they would bo made by increased in-creased population. There is a vast dilVereuee between the timbered mountains moun-tains of tho west and the wide forests which hound the vast prairie lauds of the "east. |
