Show Not over Fourteen Hundred. "Our Mutual Friend," riot Dickens' but the mutual friend of General Maxwell Max-well and ourselves, has given us a litte more infonnauon about the proposed election content for the Deltgateship: but he is so confounded close we can only squeeze a little out at a tin.e, and that on the promi of fjickr-st scciecv. which must be kept inviolate. TIL time he say?, the General announces that Hon. W. H. Hooper didn't set I over fourteen hundred legal votes in the last election, but by a peculiarly curious speties of calculation makes them a little over twenty-six hundred. Bravo, Genera; ! You'll come out right on the figures alter a while, ii' you keep studying the addition table. Bst just here comes in a piece of befogging be-fogging that needs the gas turned on gasoline will do, or the Danforth fluid, or anything but verbal gas. The General, Gen-eral, it is ailegc-d, says there are not more than twenty-eight hundred legal voters in the Territory ! If Captain ' Hooper did not get more than fourteen nundred of them and yet got over twenty-six hundred, how many fell to the share of the gallant General? Post us! That's something will bear explaining-considerable explaining. But. again: what constitutes a legal voter? It has been held . that American born citizens and 'aliens naturalized had the right of franchise. And it has been held beforetime that Chinamen and unnaturalized immigrants immi-grants were not legal voters; indeed some of the States and Territories are tar enough behind the age to say that they still are not voters. How ijjt", General ? Were those Chinamen who voted legal voters? And do they form part of the memorable twenty-iight twenty-iight hundred ? And were the American born citizens and naturalized aliens who voted not legal voters '? And how about those gentlemen from the South, just three weeks in the Territory, who voted not for Captain Hooper? Were they legal voters? And how could loyal Republicans affiliate affi-liate with the "seoesh" for the purpose pur-pose of securing their votes and they just arrived in the Territory ? Wont you tell us about these matters, aud! how they "hitch?" Do; that's a dear, good fellow. |
