The Special Committee appointed to examine and Kt-pert on Sewing Machine at I he ortb Carolina (state Fair, held at Haleigh last week awarded a Gold Medal to the , Florence Sewluff Machine for the eae and quietness of Its movements, perfection and large variety ofwork, and Its valuable new features, making ma-king it the most valuable Sewing i Machine for family use. I i ... Parlies contemplating the purchase pur-chase of Sewing Machine! are requested re-quested to read the following from the Sew Vork "Tribune" of Oct. lUlb, 18701 SEWING MACHINES. We have recently had occasion to make some inquiries into the progress of improvement improve-ment in the mechanism of sewing machines, and were not a little surprised to learn that the central idea in the nrat invention the , shuttle still holds its place, though many attempts have been made to supercede it. ' The shuttle, in combination with the needle, is dull the means used to form the stitch, in the leading machines, and we find that the growth of trade U chiefly with theshuttle-uiing theshuttle-uiing machines. Ihe improvements that are taking firm hold in practical u$e are, therefore, necessarily necessa-rily in connection with the shuttle, either in the detail of the shuttle itself, or in other parts of the machine connected with it, to cause tne whole to operate more perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its uso. Many important gains in this direction, made since the first great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embod.ed in the "Florenco" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to carefully inspect the ".Florence" before making ma-king a choice. The points peculiar to this machine are: An unusual amount of money is spent in mailing the "Florence," thereby securing the beet material (steel, for instance, where others use cast-iron ), and the cnet finish of important parts (.the shuttle, for example, being rigidly rejected U it varies from the standard l-2.0wth of an inch!) It is constructed con-structed on the simplest scientific principles, entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, and links wtiich so often get perversely out of order and sorely perplex every one but the practiced machinist by their unaccountable unaccount-able freaks. The "Florence" is so easily managed, and its use is so readily learned, that an ordinary girl of ten has sense and muscle enough to run it perfectly. The lockstitch, lock-stitch, as made by the "F'iorence" is very regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, 1 and is drawn into the fabrio evenly, gradually, grad-ually, exactly, without jerking, and without causing the seam to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger itd breaking; consequently, con-sequently, veiy tine threads and light fabrics can be used. Besides this, the "Florence" (in all but the cheapest styles) also makes three additional stitches a double lock, a single knot and a double knot which are stronger and more elastic than any other stitch, and which are made by no other machine. ma-chine. Ihe "F'iorence" is the only machine that his a reversiole ;eed, whereby the direction di-rection of the sewing can be instantly changed without stopping the work, thus enabling the operator to quilt or embroider with unusual tacility, to sew backwards and ' eaily strengthen a seam wherever desired, and, finally, by a few repeated stitches, to fasten ends in the quickest and strongest way. It is the only machine that has a self-adjusting self-adjusting shuttle-thread tension, which works so perfectly that the operator can run across the t.eaviest seams and sew the finest linen and the thickest broadcloth in immediate imme-diate succession withont breaking the thread and without changing the needle, stitch or ' tension. The "F lorence" draws the thread into the cloth with unequaled precision and certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic "take-up" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left alter the stitch with an accurate promptness thai prevents all snarling snarl-ing or dropping of stitches, and allows the operator to sew backward, or to run off the cloth and on aain. with perfect impunity. It has an improved elastic- hemmer, exclusively exclu-sively its own, which is managed with ease, , and will make a hem of any width on any material. It not only makes a perfect gather . and sews it to a band at one operation, but it hems, and binds, and fells, and quilts, and cords, and tucks, and gathers, and braida without basting. Such special provision Ls made agamst injurious wear that the "Florence" "Flor-ence" is claimed and guaranteed by the Company Com-pany to last twice &s long withont repair as any other shuttle machine in the market, wi:hou: the siihteii difiicuky. Every part of the "Florence" is so perfectly and permanently perma-nently adjusted, and it has so few joints and points oi friction, that it runs with the utmost ut-most ease. Ihe needle is set and . threaded, and the stitch is lengthened, shortened, or reversed with the utmost ut-most ease. In using the "Florence" neither the work nor the operator's dre;s ii liable to be soiled. The "ilorence" with all these " o aims to superiority, seiis at the same price a other first-class machines. It haa lately been revised by the author, and materially improved by the addition of much important matter, giving all the late laws and published decisions down to lSby This book has, up to the present time, reached reach-ed a larger gale than any other work of the kind in this country. This fact may be mentioned men-tioned as evidence of itd superior merit. Ii6 excellence consists both in the matter 'em braced, and the arrangement or classification classifica-tion of subjects. In the collection of matter contained in the work it is intended to give all the statute law and the general principles of the common com-mon law in connection therewith, which a justice of the paace, police magistrate, constable con-stable or coroner will require in dischargi ng their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference in ordinary c-isea, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This will entirely eupersede the necessity for reference to the volumes ol the statutes. 'Ihe arrangement of the work ia methodical, methodi-cal, and cf the essence of its value, presenting present-ing each subject in its order and in its proper relation with others. The plan of the arrangoinent is entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of general remark that the author has, in this work, presented the law with a clearness and simplicity of style which renders ren-ders the whole aliV.e plain to the common understanding as to the more advanced lawyer. law-yer. The justico of the peace, police magistrate, constable, and coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instructions instruc-tions in regard to every branch of his duty. Tho practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arranged in convenient form, all the statuto law and decisions.with reference to adjudicated cises applicable in ordinary practice. The business man will find in it a complete collection of forms required in the transaction transac-tion of business. Students of the law will likewise find this a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general, principles of tho common law, clearly stated, in connection connec-tion with the ordinary branches of juris prudence. pru-dence. The following brief reference to the contents con-tents ol this work will afford in some.degree an idoa of its peculiar merits. The book is divided in five parts, the subject of each being be-ing methodically arranged in chapters or appropriate ap-propriate subdivisions, as follows Part 1. Comprised in thirteen chapters, treating : 1 Of the office of justice of the peace. 2 Of the jurisdiction of justices of the peace. 3 Of the different forms of action. 4 Of the commencement of suita, and the service and return of process. 5 Of the appearance of the parties. 6 Of pleadings. 7 Of witnesses, compelling the attendance thereof, taking depositions, and of oaths and affirmations. affirma-tions. 8 Of the trial, and incidents there to. 90f evidence. 10 Of the docket, and forms of docket entries. 11 Ofjudgment, costs, and filing transcrip L 2 Of appeals and writ of certiorari. 13 Of execution and garnishment.
