Show THE DIFFERENCE The Republicans of Utah have been stirred up to action In reference to the participation of women citizens in political po-litical affairs by the course pursued in tie Democratic party but they have not come to the front in the same bold and unequivocal manner and invited In-vited the ladles to participate with them on equal terms dn political affairs They are acting in the spirit of the ambiguous equal suffrage plank in their party platform which says We favor granting equal suffrage of women wo-men Of course it is supposed that they meant equal suffrage with men and not merely as the language denotes de-notes that they only wanted women to have equal suffrage with one another It will be observed that they do not invite the ladies to become members of their Republican Leagues but will permit them to organize into womans clubs These will be separate and distinct dis-tinct from the organizations of the men A sort of side Issue a hind of 1I 1 I 8 sewing circle arrangement or Dorcas society The truth is that the Republican party of Utah has never been at heart favorable to the full political enfranchisement enfran-chisement of the women and placing them on the plane of full political equality with male citizens They have exhibited this disinclination from the first They showed it distinctly In the constitutional convention They fought every proposition looking to the exercise of political rights by women wo-men until after the entrance of the state into the Union And if the Democrats Demo-crats in that body had not held together to-gether solidlyonly four or five voting with the Republicans and for the action ac-tion of the most progressive members of the Republican party the women I of Utah would have been left today in the condition of citizens without a voice in public affairs When the Democratic party announced an-nounced itself on this important question ques-tion it spoke in no uncertain tones It came out emphatically and fully in favor of conferring upon women Citizens zens every right and privilege and power enjoyed by male citizens In the movement recently Inaugurated to bring the women to the front they did not put them off into a corner by themselves but invited them In on equal terms with men as members of the Democratic societies of Utah They made them officers in those societies so-cieties and sent them as delegates to I the territorial convention They proved that they meant all they said The women delegates showed themselves them-selves capable of understanding the principles of political economy and their participation in the affairs of the Democratic party shows that they are able to exercise the franchise and fill such positions as are adapted to theirs their-s x with honor and ability The course taken by the respective parties in relation to the women of Utah ought to be a sign to the sex where their true interest lies end to which party they should attach themselves them-selves in the exercise of those political poli-tical rights and privileges which have I been secured to them by much exertion exer-tion and full determination that they should be made entirely free I We have no fears as to the course which will be pursued in this direction by the good and true and ried women wo-men of Utah |
